A concern over my safety.

So long story short, we are getting rid of a trouble maker house mate in a few days, he's only in the place four months but he's done nothing but cause trouble since he arrived in. It's great that he's leaving, however he has expressed to me that because I was instrumental in not taking his crap in the house, as soon as he leaves the house for good on the 30th, I am no longer safe while on my way to work in the morning, and his intention is to gather up a few mates and have me beaten to a pulp basically.

Now upon hearing this, my first thought was to contact the police, as I consider this to be pretty much a genuine threat. The guy is not Irish (neither am I FYI) and I spent a few months living in a hostel, and without blowing this up into a race related thing, I have seen what the bad eggs of his nationality are capable of. I've seen people badly beaten for money etc by these people. The bad lot of his particular nationality are quite violent and prone to excessive drinking etc. Thats the reason I'm bringing this into it.

Now, my second thought was to as soon as possible go out and buy something to defend myself with. I realise this is probably very stupid, as the way life works I'd end up copping a charge in the end and they'd be in the wind. However, what can the police really do for me? It's not like I have the guy on video threatening me...

What I would like the police to do is scare him off, take a copy of his passport, visit the new place he is moving to and also take copies of the passports of his new housemates which I assume are the planned assailants... but have they got enough cause to do this if I approach them with this? Or are they going to turn me away. As I said, I am taking this threat seriously because he is an aggresive type and I have seen what people like him are capable of, and would rather not die in the gutter of a head injury... any advice on this would be appreciated. I don't have family or anything, so I'm kinda alone on this. If this is in the wrong forum feel free to move it :) Thanks.

Try and record him making threats. take some photographs of him as well. use a phone to video him around the house. If you are carrying anything for self protection it is better if it is a dual purpose item. An item that you might use or need at work is ideal.

Make sure you tell someone (family/friend/Police) - that in the event that you are injured - you suspect this guy may be involved.

sounds like you need a course of Krav Maga....check it out at www(dot)KravMagaIreland(dot)com

However you should still report this to the police. If he is as bad a toerag as you claim they probably know all about him already and it may just be the lead they are looking for.

What's the point of doing the (dot) thing for a website url?

    Horrible situation to be in.

    1) if you are satisfied the threat is genuine, contact gardai and report the threats made to you. Expect to be asked to provide a witness statement and do this. Let them take it from here.

    2) Start taking sensible precautions for your safety. Don't go the same way to work every day if you're walking and try not to be accompanied. Try to walk in 'inhabited' areas where there are businesses open, people around etc.

Hypothetically (lets hope it doesn't happen) if you were attacked mob-handed then anything short of a gun which you can carry intending to be used in self-defence will be taken off you and used as a weapon against you. I presume you're not planning on carrying a gun.

That's aside from the fact that almost anything effective in its own right will be illegal to carry.

No lol, not a gun. I don't want to carry anything at all to be honest, I'm just not that guy. But if the alternative is ending up breathing through a tube... I would prefer to carry even something 'girlier' (:P) even, like mace if it came to it... but I know everything I can buy to defend myself is pretty illegal and I don't want to even go there.

To be honest I would much much much prefer to know that the gardai will be able to do something effective about it, that's all I want. Any off-duty garda ever post here? Would this be the section they'd frequent? I would just rather know that they can do something, instead of going up to a garda station and having some bobby shrug his shoulders at me cause I don't have a HD video of him confessing to threatening me yknow... I know their hands are tied to a certain extent with these things but...

If you are credible you will be taken seriously. That doesn't always mean someone is charged & prosecuted, but you will be taken seriously.

Yeah I don't really care about that, sounds like a ton of hassle, I just wanted him scared off the idea. I went around to the local last night, talked to the garda, had them come down, they seem to have sorted it hopefully. :pac:

    Sure he's not Irish? :pac:

Seriously though, seems like a trip to the police is in order. They can't do anything unless they know about it. They probably won't be able to do something right now, I don't know, maybe they could but if something does happen you at least you'll be down on the record as warning them about it. The police aren't going to throw you out of their station. They should be courteous and sympathetic to your situation and also be able to answer all the legal quaetions you're asking here.
