Sky news was just reporting on it also. http://news.sky.com/skynews/Home/Technology/Video-Sony-PlayStation---Hacker-Breaks-Into-Network-And-Steals-Details-Of-Millions-Of-Gamers/Article/201104415979992?lpos=Technology_Carousel_Region_1&lid=ARTICLE_15979992_Video%3A_Sony_PlayStation_-_Hacker_Breaks_Into_Network_And_Steals_Details_Of_Millions_Of_Gamers
It took Sony long enough it seems, to tell the people!
A hacker broke into the PlayStation video game online network and stole names, addresses and possibly credit card data belonging to 77 million people.

    77 Million! Wow!!!

They never said it "Has" been stolen.

they are speculating it "may" have been stolen.

Also, by reading the thread in the playstation forum with the other links about this added in... I don't think its possible your details have been stolen, unless you use cracked firmware.

    Thats sensationalism on their part.

there was custom firmware that was able to spoof details which PSN would authenticate. It's believed through this firmware, someone could log other peoples details.

but as I mentioned a minute ago, you need to install that custom firmware yourself.

I have a PS3 and have a PSN account, but I don't think I've ever bought anything through PSN using my credit card.

Is there any easy way for me to check if I'm at risk? Apart from checking my card statement.

[EDIT]Answered by Dravokivich, I never installed any custom firmware so should be safe[/EDIT]

are you for real? I work for a marketing company and I know how PR works. I just never knew it worked so well on people like you.

    tip
Although we are still investigating the details of this incident, we believe that an unauthorized person has obtained the following information that you provided: name, address (city, state/province, zip or postal code), country, email address, birthdate, PlayStation Network/Qriocity passwords and login and handle/PSN online ID. It is also possible that your profile data, including purchase history and billing address (city, state, zip), and your PlayStation Network/Qriocity password security answers may have been obtained. If you have authorized a sub-account for your dependent, the same data with respect to your dependent may have been obtained. While there is no evidence that credit card data was taken at this time, we cannot rule out the possibility. If you have provided your credit card data through PlayStation Network or Qriocity, to be on the safe side we are advising that your credit card number (excluding security code) and expiration date may also have been obtained.

means your **** has been compromised. Simple.

    Really!

Funny. The English Times reports the same figures stolen!
There must be a lot of your sensationalism going around including at Sony itself who eventually reported (and ADMITTED) the said figures to the media and public.

Im PSN, sure whats the worst that can happen? They run up huge bills on our cards, the bank pays for the fraud bill, we pay for the banks bill, circle is complete

Just change passwords on your email address and notify your bank about it, they can flag your card, or cancel your card, if all else fails.....

Shoot the kids, drown the wife, burn the house down, move to mexico.........just to be on the safe side.

Now let's rob the bank, give the money to the poor, then rob the poor, and shoot the money!

I know it's crazy. But it could just be a warning.
I'm not saying that all the information is safe, but just because the there is a possibility, doesn't mean it's actually happened.

Anyway, as pointed out previously, you'd need to be using the cracked firmware to be in any real danger.

I bought a PSN game last year so I rang my bank about possibly getting a new card because my own is expired in May anyway. I mentioned the Sony thing and they said the security team were aware of it and if theres any dubious activity they would be all over that shít.

Good to know. If you cant trust your bank, who can you trust.........
