Not sure if this is everywhere but I was in Aldi in Mullingar yesterday and they are selling off the Tevion Car Radios for 24.99 (The ones that were 50 quid)
They had a few left over by the far till.
I picked one up for my camper van as it's a great price for a Radio with Aux in and USB / SD card support.

Here's a pic of it (Click for bigger image)

Not a current special tho, that link is for Dec 10. Will depend on leftover stock in individual stores. Might just make the trip to Mullingar myself.

Would this fit in an old VW Polo ? Are they hard to fit ?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 3,835 ✭✭✭unreggd

Got one in Tallaght - perfect!

Just FYI there were none on display. I had to ask a manager, who got me one from a cabinet under the tills, dont think the cashier even knew

So ask the Manager to make sure!

    Bargainnnnnnn! Cheers OP

picked one up earlier in kells shop. thanks to op for this thread.
it's the bargain of the month. doesnt come with the adaptor for the fm signal, though there may be one connected to the old unit. the bass/treble adjustment was tricky to figure out. it's just a light press of the circular volume button to access. manual mentioned press and hold (think it may have been a generic manual). great sound compared to the old sony explode unit.

Yes it should fit it as I got one in my Ibiza a while back. Practically same car.

Few dodgy things with it though.

    1. You need to get an antenna adapter to fit the old one.
    2. I replaced the old radio with this but the block connector (plastic connector with lots of wires) is wired up differently than the one I took out. I had no memory power so when car was switched off I lost all stations and settings and had to rewire it. You might need to get mechanic to do it if your not great with this stuff.
    3. This new radio gets interference when I charge my phone in the car. Old stock radio didn't.

It's an ok radio, suits an old banger down to the ground. Slightly awkward layout and tiny characters on buttons makes it unsuitable to change when driving!

Make sure to keep the keys to take the radio back out in case of any problems & don't bother pushing it into the fully locked position until you get your memory power wired up properly as they can be hard to take out.

Haha, looking at the specs, they quote "ESP" for Electronic Shock Protection, anyone who's half into cars will now that ESP with regard to anything in a car should mean something else! :D

Bloody typical - it looks like mine ain't working :(

Although it could be down to the wiring.

It looks like Ground, 12V and the ACC+ cable were in the correct positions.

However, there are also 2 other connections that my old block connector didn't have. On the new radio they are labeled Panel Light and Antenna power.

When I pushed the reset button with the control panel detached a little red LED came on under the reset button - so I was assuming it was getting power OK.

But when I connect the control panel there is nothing happening....

    Boo !!!

I had that happen before, cant remember what fixed it but it was either running a new earth to it, or swapping the battery and ignition wires the opposite way around.

May not be the fix . . . but swapping the red and yellow wires might help.

Had the same issue before in a VW Polo, rather than chopping and cutting wires just got a harness adapter which sorted out the issue and saved a fair bit of hassle.. something like this.. not sure what type of car you have.. but on ebay you should find the one you need...

    http://cgi.ebay.ie/ISO-wiring-harness-lead-adapter-Volkswagen-VW-Audi-/250741622217?pt=UK_Cars_Parts_Vehicles_Terminals_Cabling_ET&hash=item3a615d85c9#ht_2470wt_1022

Also if you already have a harness adapter, before I also got the red light and nothing on the unit, after looking around for sometime I found the fuse for the radio had blown in the fuse panel of the car. I had thought incorrectly that because the red light was on the unit was getting the power it needed. but they are not connected.. anyways something else to try..

Thanks guys - tried everything and no joy :(

I also found the wiring diagram of the old radio connector and (here) and the connector block has the same wiring.
I suspect the issue is with the clip on head unit thing.
When it's off, and I press the reset button, a little red LED below that lights up Based on that I'm assuming there is power. (although for some reason the Aeriel must be plugged in - same on the old radio, unless aerial is plugged in the radio won't turn on).
When I put the head unit on - not a jot.
I also tried a separate earth, and switching wires - just in case...

Anyhow - well miffed with it. I know there will be none left in the Aldi's.

Ironic - it was me who posted the bargain alert in the first place !

I know this sounds stupid but when you mount the facia , did you press the power on button ?

You should post over on the motor forum, the issue of getting power when first plugged in but nothing after it is very common. It happened to at least two radios i put into different cars, but i just cant remember how i fixed it, but if i fixed it, it must have been simple enough:D

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 4,196 ✭✭✭deadl0ck

Cool - thanks for the advice - I will post there and see if anybody has any advice

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 4,196 ✭✭✭deadl0ck

Senna - thanks for the advice.

I got it sorted on the motor forum.

    It works !!! :D:D:D

    Details here

It was down to weird wiring due to it being a motorhome, and a bad ground connection.

    Plays mp3 ok.

But for radio - found sound not great - kind of a back warble that makes listening hard.

And the receiption is no where near as good as the old one I took out with the short antanae in my car.
Cannot pick up any stations at all with the antanae down (used to get a couple with old radio).

I might have to put my the radio back I got with my car even ithough its very worn looking.

    “Roll it back”
