Network firmware

I've pretty much decided to buy a Galaxy S II, and I'm weighing up my options regarding going the sim-free from the UK route in May, or waiting till the networks here get it in June.

The sensible part of my brain is saying wait and save yourself €300 odd, but I don't want a situation where I'm stuck waiting for the network to approve every update to Android.

What's the current situation regarding network-modified firmware? Last I heard, O2 and 3 brand them, Meteor don't. I haven't a clue about Vodafone or E-Mobile.

Cheers. Would I be more likely to get an unbranded one from Carphone Warehouse actually, since they supply all networks? Or is each unit they have set up with a particular network's firmware in advance?

According to someone on here the Samsung has the unlock code in a text file on the phone itself so unlocking it and unbranding it shouldn't be a problem

Isn't that simply to remove the simlock?

Does it not involve rooting the phone and installing the stock firmware? This is what I had to do way back when I was debranding my Hero.
