I Just brought a car in from UK but car does not have v5 with it. Dealer says he will forward it. What do I do to legallyto keep customs off my back? Are customs still responsible for this department since you now pay through NCT center within 7 days and not VRO within 24 hours. Am I correct here?
Can one get an extension to allow V5 etc to come through?

If I were you, I wouldn't do any deal with a dealer which doesn't want to give you V5C in hand.
First of all you are not legally allowed to drive a vehicle abroad (including from UK to ROI) without holding V5C document.
Secondly you can't really register the car here in Ireland without that document.

The short answer to your question (can I get an exception waiting for V5) is no. Although you know this now, you needed the V5 with you - hopefully he hasn't sent it off to Swansea...

You need to present the car within 7 days of landing it, and you need the V5 as proof of ownership to process the VRT assessment.

You have 30 days to complete the whole process including payment. If you were a few days out presenting it because you didn't have the V5 that wouldn't cost you any money as long as you completed the payment within 30 days.

Technically you might be in a bit of difficulty if you were challenged on its status :-

Accepting that you shouldn't be driving it until taxed following VRT process but when you present it they give you a document confirming that you've done this, which would stop customs seizing it from the side of the road and anecdotal evidence suggests that most gardai on a traffic stop will not do you for no tax if in possession of that document.

If you don't have that document within 7 days of landing it, I wouldn't drive it at all, and I'd be urging the dealer on to get it over here asap.

I'm doing the same thing myself at the moment - had the appointment this morning - got referred on the Revenue (apparently anything which is considered remotely 'high end' does) so I'm waiting on the bad news. I spoke to NCT test centre before I left and one thing they stressed 'above all else' is do not leave the UK without the V5.

The new VRT procedure is here http://ncts.ie/vrt.html

You need to phone the NCTS within 7 days. Your VRT appointment could be weeks afterwards. I phoned on the 9th of April, I've mine tomorrow morning.

Sorry that's correct (you need to make the appointment within 7 days with them - I said you need to turn up and present within 7).

You still need to complete it/pay etc within 30 days to avoid interest/penalties - should be no prob there does not seem to be a major waiting list.

Good luck paintdoctor - hope it goes the right side of the line !

From when the car lands on in the country.

Does payment have to be on day of appointment or can you drive away knowing what to pay and come back on day 30 after car enters state to make payment.

    You can do either.

They can only process a payment by laser of up to 1500 yoyos or something like that. Anything more than that has to be a bank draft. They'll go through all that with you when you show up for your assessment.

I guess that fair enough. I bring in car. Have seven days to contact nctc and 30 days to come up with payment. I got a quote of €3500 on Vrt calculator for a mondeo 08 tit x with 90 k. Sounds a lot

What was the OMSP given on the quote you got - btw that quote won't include value of any extras on it (calculate by emission based percentage of factory price of extras depreciated by 25% per year).

The quotes are not always accurate - and to appeal you have to first pay the assessed VRT in full.

I THink OMSP was 33k but Ill check again. No extras other than factory fitted. Co2 reading of 159 though.

Current omsp €14,500 New €33,000. Can anything be done to pay less. I was expecting to pay about €2500.

You have to pay the VRT first, and if you feel it's in error, appeal it afterwards.

I just got my assessment today - inspection was yesterday - fast work and cheaper than I had budgeted for.
