sorry forgot to mention above I would consider most makes and i would consider a bike a few years old as long as it was kept well

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 1,107 ✭✭✭ytareh

Youve put 300k on a two year old bike!?Oh wait I was thinking in car distance -300,000km!!!-You mean 300km in total .Better up the training for your event .

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 55 ✭✭ciaranott

ah no it was a two year old bike but I bought it Second hand I only had it a couple of weeks I'm after lookin at giant defy 4 think it's 2010 owner is looking for 400 it needs a new set of tires is it a bit pricey any toughts

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 1,107 ✭✭✭ytareh

I wouldnt pay 400 for a 499 (as quick research suggests) bike .The market is utterly flooded with these kinds of bikes due to the Bike to Work scheme -some buying and losing interest and more realising that if you can buy a new bike for effectively half price theres a killing to be made in it !The Defy 4 DOES have a good reputation .Personally I coulnt live with a bike with Sora levers and would need to get one with Tiagra which is anatomically/fundamentally the same as the top of the range Shimano and not some horrid aberration of a plasticky ,uncomfortable ,tiny, sticky, micro lever.Do you not qualify for Bike to Work?(only days left?!)

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 55 ✭✭ciaranott

your right about the giant there's no budging the owner about the price so I've had to look elsewhere I don't qualify for the back to work unfortunatly. however I've just seen a orbea asphalt owner wants 475 never heard of the brand but looks like a decent few parts on it any taught

Orbea are a fine- spanish as far as I know- brand .Really there are loads of bikes (even new unused) in the category youre looking for available.Try here ,gumtreeie ,adverts.ie and donedeal.ie .

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 1,738 ✭✭✭2011abc

The classic , mortal error of new bike buyers is to get one too big .You want the SMALLEST possible fit .(No point in carrying around extra metal!)And too big generally mean over stretched and tired arms and back becoming a BIG problem more so than not being able to get the right 'height'.Im 5ft11in and the correctb fit for me is more or less 56cm .57 would be ok ,55 might be cutting it a bit tight but 58 or even 59 are stupid big.Now the very important thing is these numbers only apply to traditional straight cross bar/top tube bikes. If your frame is sloping you MUST check carefully with the manufacturers documents to see what the 'correct' size is.

thanks for all the information I've been trawelling through donedeal adverts and gumtree and buy and sell I've also tried a couple of bike shops I got my size checked in one of the bike shops and he said I was a 54cm didn't mention anything bout bar size/length I'll do some looking around on that I haven't had much luck on the sites mentioned above if anyone has any other ideas I'd be very grateful

Ciaran, I've a Sintesi Spy in size 54 for sale in colour blue(not advertised anywhere yet)
It's a Columbus Altec 2 aluminium frame, with a full 10 speed Campagnolo Chorus groupset, full carbon fork, Xero xr-1 lite wheelset, Ritchey Stem, 3t bars, and a Selle Italia saddle.
I'll post up a couple of pics if you are interested. I was looking for €550 for it. I'll confirm the weight later also.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 55 ✭✭ciaranott

yeah if u could post some pics up of the bike that'd be great I'll take a look at them how old is the bike/ frame or are they different parts you've picked up for it

    IMG_8770crop.jpg
    IMG_8771.jpg
    IMG_8772.jpg

Weight as pictured 18.3lbs - no pedals.
(I can include a pair of Campag Chorus Pro-Fit pedals also, but most lads prefer to choose their own)
With a lighter pair of tyres and a carbon seatpost, weight will be below 18lbs no probs.
The bike is about 8 years old, but has only done a few hundred kms. Everything is in great condition, except a small amount of paint peel around the rear drop outs - but is nothing serious being an aluminium frame.
The Chorus is a really nice groupset if I am allowed to say so myself:D, and I actually prefer the shift action to the Record groupset I have on another bike!

If I may observe as an impartial party that (Campag Chorus equipped)bike is a cut above the others youre interested in and is worth SERIOUS consideration .FULL carbon fork and full Chorus groupset is normally only found on bikes over 2000 euro !Now you do have to consider that its relatively old but then again the mileage is very low .If the seller had a 4 at the front of the selling price Id be encouraging you to jump at this deal.Youre looking for a 300-450 training bike ,this is a 2000-2500 RACING bike for pretty much the same money .(A new Campag Chorus 11 speed groupset costs over 1000 euro-sprockets and especially chainrings on Campag dont wear out quarter as fast as Shimano )

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 55 ✭✭ciaranott

cheers thanks for the input i know its a very well spec'd bike i am going to look at a fully carbon lapiere bike tomorrow for around the same price i can see that the bike above has been well maintained the age of it wouldnt bother me too much( one little niggle its probably me being a newbie theres supposed to be some serious hills on this cycle and i was told that having a three ring sproket with a good gear range might be something to keep in mind) but i will be giving the bike some serious consideration. Also maybe i could get some feedback on this i was looking for a 54cm frame i know alot of manufacturers differ but this carbon lapiere bike im going to see tomorrow is a 48cm owner said it was sloping geometry and that it would suit my height im 5"9 i wasnt sure if he was having me on

Dead right. That's a very good deal. Nice frame, BRILLIANT groupset, and very solid finishing kit and wheels.

Traditionally frames are sized by seat tube length. A compact (sloping top tube) frame has a shorter seat tube so that measurement is not useful - it's reach to the handlebars (effective top tube length) that's most critical, as you want to be able to get a comfortable arm bend even in the furthest part of the drops.

gman2k's bike is right sexy and no mistake.

I have just been able to increase my budget to 600-650 euro if anyone needs a quick sale maybe we can do a deal i need to get a bike quick, had bad luck with a fully carbon lapperie went down to view the bike owner found a crack in the frame (his friend had borrowed it for the weekend) he was very honest about it and as soon as he noticed it didnt even try sell it to me.

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 573 ✭✭✭dave.obrien

PM gman2k. I don't think you'll find a much better deal than his. Spend the excess on tyres, bottles, computer, shorts, whatever, but his bike is a fantastic deal.

For the record, I've never met gman2k, nor his bike, it's just genuinely a very good offer.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 55 ✭✭ciaranott

thanks for the honesty dave ill have to have a think about it. Just with the extra cash want to get the best bike i can, i already have water bottles cages computer shorts pump etc.. i have it in my head i might be able to get something like this http://www.gumtree.ie/p/for-sale/parlee-z1-new-carbon-road-bike-52cm-dura-ace-16-lbs-490/76550997 althought that one seems bit too good to be true

It seems way too good to be true...

Obviously you want to get the best value that you can, and if you can find a better package, fair play to ya! Happy hunting.

Dare I say, if that alleged bike is real and available at that price, I'd buy it myself:D
Must check where my local Western Union outlet is!
Anyway, back to the real world!

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 1,107 ✭✭✭ytareh

Yes ciaranott thats a scam Id be 99.9% sure .Check if you like .Just email the guy and I almost guarantee you he will be looking for payment 'over the net' ,definitely not meet in person with cash .Any ad on Gumtree and a lot of similar sites , that dont have a contact number would immediately arouse my suspicion.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 4,076 ✭✭✭gman2k

Yeah, and the problem is that is leads buyers to think that there are full pro carbon bikes with DA grouppos out there for under €500!
It strips the market of an understanding of value.

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 573 ✭✭✭dave.obrien

I had a look at that one again, it's very weird... The photographs look like they were taken by a cyclist, and the piece is well written, but it's out by about a grand in it's evaluation... Did he miss a 1?

Probably not, it's probably a well put together scam...

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 4,076 ✭✭✭gman2k

Yeah, I did a Tineye image search, but it didn't find anything.....

However, the bike is very USA specced, Bontrager wheels, Chris King headset and the DA.
There is no way a hard pressed seller would fire sale a bike like that for that pricepoint.
If it was priced as 4500, you wouldn't blink.....
The lack of a phone number is a giveaway, Gumtree has been riddled with scammers.

*Apologies to the geniune seller out there if he exists

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 1,107 ✭✭✭ytareh

Yeah there are dozens of them on gumtree...cars,laptops ,phones ...surprised to see a bike though but that reeks of SCAM!No irish mobile is the main warning sign ...

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 55 ✭✭ciaranott

just to let everyone know that was a scam and your right it does under-estimate the market it gives people false hope(im guilty) i sent an email to the advistiser a number times no reply id say gumtree shut him down

If the size suits you go for gman2k's bike. I would jump at it if it were a little smaller (or I a little taller ;)). Unless, of course, gman2k's offer is also too good to be true..... :D

    Have to agree with gman

We never have enough sunshine or light in Ireland to take a picture of that quality with no shadows on the wall or the ground from the bike at all

If its not a scam he took the bike a very long distance to take the pic
