    Car due it's first ever NCT. Being from the north I'm nit familiar with the procedure for going through this or even booking it. Car is 4 yr old from new. Any help appreciated

    go to www.ncts.ie and follow the instructions. you can pick a test centre, an available time and then show up. you'll pay 50 euro. you'll need to bring the ownership document for your car and proof of id for yourself. if you fail you'll usually get 28 days to bring it back for a retest of the failed parts. they'll charge you less than 50 for this.

    Just check the basics like tyres, lights, wipers and headlight adjustment. If it needs anything a retest is cheap. Never spend money before the test.

    Garage we bought car in offered pre NCT for 35e. Is it worth spending this as they have done all our services to date. Garage is appleyard

    and the nct as a pretest only costs 25€

    Putting a car in for a pre-NCT is a licence for a garage to print money, don't do it. Check your tyre tread, make sure the lights are all working and after that it's down to luck, and the sign of the zodiac the tester was born under :rolleyes:

    The only pre-NCT test/service that's worth doing is the one that comes with a guarantee that you'll pass or they will fix the problem, these tests cost more than 100 euros so it's just not worth it.

    Pre-NCT would only check a few basic things, e.g. lights working, oil in the engine, got 4 wheels on. Very very very few garages have the equipment to check the same things the NCT do, and if they did they I'm fairly certain they wouldn't be offering to do it for €35.

    Pre-NCT = waste of money, imo.

    No. The NCT centre will tell you if anything needs doing. The restest (if required) is half the price of the original test or free depending on what they need to recheck.

    As the others pointed out, check the basics your self, thread, lights, etc, make sure the car is clean, and turn up on time.
