Competition Standard Scratch (CSS)

    Quick question re. CSS...

I played an open singles a few weeks back and scored 36 points off 15 (15.4). The Standard Scratch Score for the course (SSS) is 72.

Anyways I checked howdidido shortly after and saw that I had finished 4th, 38 points won the competition. Here comes the question; there were 2 CSS for the competition, one for home players (74) & another for visitors (76). This resulted in a cut of 1.2 down to 14.2... Is it normal for there to be 2 standard scratches for open singles? There were approx. 80 entrants in total and scoring wasn't great (despite near perfect conditions)

FYI: This isn't a rant about getting cut a shot, I'm delighted as my goal for the year i to get down to 12 so I'm getting there!! Just found it a but strange that they would calculate a different CSS for the small number of visitors that played...

    Thanks,

    K

I think there has to be a minimum of 20 home and 20 away players for there to be two different CSS, something like that anyway

If there's more than 20 of each (20+ home and 20+ away) then a separate CSS may be calculated. If there's less than 20 of either then it's all under the one CSS.
If there should be two separate CSSs but the home one calculates as higher then the concept is abandoned and one single one is done for all...
It's all automatic by the way (luckily!).

I might be looking at this wrong but did you not score under the CSS? You scored 36 points with the CSS at 36?

Sorry I might not understand it coz I haven't played in any comps etc. Can you explain why you got cut??

If the CSS for away players was 76 and the par was 72 well then that means 32 points was CSS.

Thanks for that AGC it wasn't looking right in my brain.

I know when 72 is the CSS you just multiply 18 (holes) by 2 (points) to give you 36 but is there a simple one formula for when the CSS is different as it was in this case?

    Cheers

CSS of 72 is not necessarily always 36 points. 36 points is the equivalent of par of the course. If the course is a par 70, and CSS is 70, then that equates to 36 points. if the course is a Par 70 and CSS is 68, then that equates to a css of 38 points (70-68+36).

Basically the formula would be 36points + (PAR -CSS).

Does anyone know if there a minimum number of entrants to a comp needed to adjust the CSS, eg A Crazy tough day and only 5 people actually play, is the CSS Still adjusted for that particular comp?

I think you need a minimum of 12 for a competition to be valid.
