Safari quitting

Safari quits on me 3-4 times a day. Usually on Youtube or boards, though that's usually with 7-8 tabs open. I also use Firefox and Chrome a little bit and should probably completely switch to these, but I've used Safari from day 1, so it's a habit at this point. I get the error report thing, but don't have a screenshot of it on me right now.

Running SL on a 2008 iMac. My 2007 Macbook has the same setup in terms of OS, but I'm not really using it for web browsing, so I can't make a comparison there.

Try clearing out your cache, browsing history, cookies, etc. These things slow down Safari after a while. Also check that you haven't any add-ons/extensions installed that could be causing the problem. Maybe install ClicktoFlash as Flash ads and video can often cause browser crashes.

However, Safari has always had stability problems in my experience. It's the reason I switched to Chrome a while ago.

Thanks, SP. I tried those suggestions a little while back with no joy. Also reinstalled Safari. I added ClicktoFlash following your post and so far things seem to be OK. However, Firefox is also showing signs of being a bit grumpy, it's not exactly freezing...a little hard to describe. I can sort of click on sites, but can't open sites already open in tabs. After a moment or two it seems to fix itself. I'm wondering if there's a wider problem, but I'll dump cookies, etc, before drawing any conclusions. When it happens, it doesn't show any 'not responding' messages in the Force Quit option. I've an ad blocker in FF, so maybe it and ClicktoFlash don't get along.

Edit, and when FF is iffy, I have to force quit it, can't use cmd and q.

Check the crash logs in your Console.app. There will be lots of individual ones for Safari. You maybe able to glean some information from individual entries.

I would say the problem is with the player plugin for the browser or something like that. Browsers & mac & flash video is always dodgey imho

Thanks both. I don't have any experience of Console, so from dipping into it, there's a lot that could be copied/pasted. Would it be be something like this or a lot more detailed? I don't know if I'm getting this from the right list/section.

I had trouble with Safari a while back and I eventually was told to dump Flash Player which solved my problem.

If you want to use the Console to faultfind, check the crashreporter logs. Looks like I have Safari problems too, from my Console! ( its 10.6 ).

Safari has been running fairly smoothly since I went with ClicktoFlash.

Another query, off the point a bit. When I open a PDF, save the link in Word (e.g., for a college assignment), and try to open it from the Word file it tends to show up as jibberish. There's usually some way around it, it's not all that annoying.

    Firefox still freezes a little.

Are you saving the PDF location or the actual PDF?

I generally save the PDF to a folder. If I need the url for the bibliography I copy it from the browser into Word.

Here's a chunk of the jibberish which appears when I reopen the PDF from the url in Word.
    %PDF-1.4 %âãÏÓ 1 0 obj << /Type /Page /Parent 53 0 R /Resources << /ColorSpace << /CS0 66 0 R /CS1 91 0 R >> /ExtGState << /GS0 69 0 R /GS1 74 0 R >> /Font << /TT0 63 0 R /TT1 62 0 R /C2_0 43 0 R /T1_0 92 0 R >> /ProcSet [ /PDF /Text ] >> /Contents 422 0 R /MediaBox [ 0 0 612 792 ] /CropBox [ 0 0 612 792 ] /Rotate 0 /StructParents 1 >> endobj 4 0 obj << /Type /Page /Parent 53 0 R /Resources << /ColorSpace << /CS0 66 0 R /CS1 91 0 R >> /ExtGState << /GS0 69 0 R /GS1 74 0 R >> /Font << /TT0 63 0 R /TT1 62 0 R /T1_0 92 0 R >> /ProcSet [ /PDF /Text ] >> /Contents 424 0 R /MediaBox [ 0 0 612 792 ] /CropBox [ 0 0 612 792 ] /Rotate 0 /StructParents 2 >> endobj 7 0 obj << /Type /Page /Parent 53 0 R /Resources << /ColorSpace << /CS0 66 0 R /CS1 91 0 R >> /ExtGState << /GS0 69 0 R /GS1 74 0 R >> /Font << /TT0 63 0 R /TT1 62 0 R /T1_0 92 0 R >> /ProcSet [ /PDF /Text ] >> /Contents 426 0 R /MediaBox [ 0 0 612 792 ] /CropBox [ 0 0 612 792 ] /Rotate 0 /StructParents 3 >> endobj 10 0 obj << /Type /Page /Parent 53 0 R /Resources << /ColorSpace << /CS0 66 0 R /CS1 91 0 R >> /ExtGState << /GS0 69 0 R /GS1 74 0 R >> /Font << /TT0 62 0 R /TT1 63 0 R /T1_0 92 0 R >> /ProcSet [ /PDF /Text ] >> /Contents 428 0 R /MediaBox [ 0 0 612 792 ] /CropBox [ 0 0 612 792 ] /Rotate 0 /StructParents 4 >> endobj 13 0 obj << /Type /Page /Parent 53 0 R /Resources << /ColorSpace << /CS0 66 0 R /CS1 91 0 R >> /ExtGState << /GS0 69 0 R /GS1 74 0 R >> /Font << /TT0 63 0 R /TT1 62 0 R /T1_0 92 0 R >> /ProcSet [ /PDF /Text ] >> /Contents 430 0 R /MediaBox [ 0 0 612 792 ] /CropBox [ 0 0 612 792 ] /Rotate 0 /StructParents 5 >> endobj 16 0 obj << /Type /Page /Parent 53 0 R /Resources << /ColorSpace << /CS0 66 0 R /CS1 91 0 R >> /ExtGState << /GS0 69 0 R /GS1 74 0 R >> /Font << /TT0 62 0 R /TT1 63 0 R /T1_0 92 0 R /TT2 44 0 R >> /ProcSet [ /PDF /Text ] >> /Contents 432 0 R /MediaBox [ 0 0 612 792 ] /CropBox [ 0 0 612 792 ] /Rotate 0 /StructParents 6 >> endobj 19 0 obj << /Type /Page /Parent 53 0 R /Resources << /ColorSpace << /CS0 66 0 R /CS1 91 0 R >> /ExtGState << /GS0 69 0 R /GS1 74 0 R >> /Font << /TT0 63 0 R /TT1 62 0 R /T1_0 92 0 R >> /ProcSet [ /PDF /Text ] >> /Contents 434 0 R /MediaBox [ 0 0 612 792 ] /CropBox [ 0 0 612 792 ] /Rotate 0 /StructParents 7 >> endobj 22 0 obj << /Type /Page /Parent 53 0 R /Resources << /ColorSpace << /CS0 66 0 R /CS1 91 0 R >> /ExtGState << /GS0 69 0 R /GS1 74 0 R >> /Font << /TT0 63 0 R /TT1 62 0 R /T1_0 92 0 R >> /ProcSet [ /PDF /Text ] >> /Contents 436 0 R /MediaBox [ 0 0 612 792 ] /CropBox [ 0 0 612 792 ] /Rotate 0 /StructParents 8 >> endobj 25 0 obj << /Type /Page /Parent 53 0 R /Resources << /ColorSpace << /CS0 66 0 R /CS1 91 0 R >> /ExtGState << /GS0 69 0 R /GS1 74 0 R >> /Font << /TT0 63 0 R /T1_0 92 0 R >> /ProcSet [ /PDF /Text ] >> /Contents 438 0 R /MediaBox [ 0 0 612 792 ] /CropBox [ 0 0 612 792 ] /Rotate 0 /StructParents 9 >> endobj 28 0 obj << /Type /Page /Parent 55 0 R /Resources << /ColorSpace << /CS0 66 0 R /CS1 91 0 R >> /ExtGState << /GS0 69 0 R /GS1 74 0 R >> /Font << /TT0 63 0 R /TT1 62 0 R /TT2 44 0 R /T1_0 92 0 R >> /ProcSet [ /PDF /Text ] >> /Contents 440 0 R /MediaBox [ 0 0 612 792 ] /CropBox [ 0 0 612 792 ] /Rotate 0 /StructParents 10 >> endobj 31 0 obj << /Type /Page /Parent 55 0 R /Resources << /ColorSpace << /CS0 66 0 R /CS1 91 0 R >> /ExtGState << /GS0 69 0 R /GS1 74 0 R >> /Font << /TT0 63 0 R /TT1 44 0 R /T1_0 92 0 R >> /ProcSet [ /PDF /Text ] >> /Contents 442 0 R /MediaBox [ 0 0 612 792 ] /CropBox [ 0 0 612 792 ] /Rotate 0 /StructParents 11 >> endobj 34 0 obj << /Type /Page /Parent 55 0 R /Resources << /ColorSpace << /CS0 66 0 R /CS1 91 0 R >> /ExtGState << /GS0 69 0 R /GS1 74 0 R

    This is the url: http://www.leeds.ac.uk/disability-studies/archiveuk/Clark,%20Laurence/clarke%20on%20comedy.pdf

Once I have finished my assignment I convert it to a PDF and when the I open the links from there they seem to work fine, but when I go back to the Word file I get the jibberish above. Not a big problem, really, more baffling. Once I have the original PDFs on my hard drive and links are accurate to keep college happy it's OK.

The 'jibberish' you pasted is actually what a PDF file looks like (scroll to bottom of page). Word is obviously displaying the code rather than interpreting it. The example here shows how to read PDF code with Notepad++ . I used Notepad to open part of your PDF.

    Voila
    %PDF-1.4
    %âãÏÓ
    1 0 obj
    <<
    /Type /Page
    /Parent 53 0 R
    /Resources << /ColorSpace << /CS0 66 0 R /CS1 91 0 R >> /ExtGState << /GS0 69 0 R /GS1 74 0 R >>
    /Font << /TT0 63 0 R /TT1 62 0 R /C2_0 43 0 R /T1_0 92 0 R >> /ProcSet [ /PDF /Text ] >>
    /Contents 422 0 R
    /MediaBox [ 0 0 612 792 ]
    /CropBox [ 0 0 612 792 ]
    /Rotate 0
    /StructParents 1
    >>
    endobj
    4 0 obj
    Good old Microsoft!

Ah right, so it's a behind the scenes version of the file, as it were?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 725 ✭✭✭muggyog

Yes. That's a novel way of putting it.

Much like what REALLY happens when you start-up a Mac ( verbose mode).
You might want to mute the sound!

    Heh, thanks.

    Well, Firefox is still iffy.
Adobe Reader can hang on my Macbook, but it usually goes away after an hour. Was a nuisance for essay work, but there's always Preview or the spacebar option.
