i know running is taking off again countrywide, but it seems boomier in the west than other places.
Im amazed at the level of interest in races such as the streets of galway/fields of athenry/ the galway 5km series etc. its great.

the 5km series for example sold out in a couple of hours (600 entries ) and prob. could have sold twice this i believe.

im not a member of any club but one of teh reasons for the success must be down to some of teh local clubs. galway city harriers and athenry ac to name just two. for me the athenry ac website is usually my first port of call for info and results.take a bow all involved.

i think even Ray darcy commented on the fact that the amount of runners for his recent 5km in galway was way above what he would have expected.

so is it the same for the rest of the country? or is it just the west awake:)

Same everywhere I think, but there seems to be alot of very well run, good value races in the west. Long may it last. After all, your hopeless at everything else- rugby, football, hurling, soccer:D
Joking - Mayo football isn't too bad.;)

I remember when I started running in 2002 that there were very few races in the west. All the races on any running calender seemed to be in either Dublin or Cork/Waterford. The change is unbelievable in such a short time. There are multiple race options now every weekend, not just in running but also in duathlon/triathlon/adventure racing. As far as I can see, though, it seems to be a national thing, but it's fantastic that there are finally so many options in the west.

Galway and Mayo are very active running wise , not so in Leitrim and roscommmon , Sligo is on the up , im from roscommon so i go further west for quality races , far better in terms of organisation and competition

That wink just about saved you!!:D

As a long time frustrated Mayo football fan it is good to see another sport progressing in Mayo. While I am not living there anymore i have heard that there is certainly a running boom there.

Soon you'll see Mayo runners almost winning on a national stage.
Leading the whole way but just getting pipped on the line,
or tripping over an open lace within sight of the line,
    or choking on a gel!
    ;-)
