Right, figured here would be as good a place as any to ask. There's a bit to it so bear with me.

Having real trouble with my laptop that's only cropped up recently. Basically earlier on windows explorer crashed and didn't reboot, meaning that the taskbar disappeared along with every icon on the desktop. After failing to restart the program as a process from task manager, i switched it off and back on and ended up in startup repair, upon which i was offered a system restore, which i went along with.

Recently i had also been getting some trouble from viruses as my AVG protection had expired and some trojans and other **** had got in. Nothing serious it would seem, though completely headwrecking as they were the type to redirect any searches i had to ad websites and other such ****. I'd scanned them a couple weeks back and got rid of them and thought nothing more of it.

However, after the system restore, they were back, so i tried scanning them again and AVG removed all but one which was being a right little bastard and wouldnt budge. This had the effect that all my searches were still redirected to garbage sites while AVG resident shield would keep popping up with a "threat detected" window every other minute for the same threat and would apparently be unable to move it. Scanned again and a big window with "multiple threats detected" (all of them the exact same one) came up, offering to fix them, which i accepted. Upon doing this, the system crashed again, ended back up in system restore, and here i am now.

At a complete loss regarding what to do, can anyone help?

While you're booting up the machine again tap F8. You should see a menu to boot in to Safe Mode (with networking), choose that.

When you're in there remove AVG (Start - Control Panel - Add/Remove Programs) and install Microsoft Security Essentials and Malwarebytes. Update both and run full scans.

    http://www.microsoft.com/en-ie/security_essentials/default.aspx

If you want to run a scan another way you can download and burn the iso of the BitDefender Rescue CD.

You just burn it and pop the cd in. Depending on your boot priority you should get a message saying "Press any key to boot from cd".

This will start the process and if your machine is connected to the net will automatically download the updates and run a scan.

Oooh forgot to mention when you do remove AVG first you may need to reboot the machine. Do that and then go in the same way to safe mode (tapping F8 while the machine is starting up).

Then when you're in install MSE and Malwarebytes.

Let us know how you get on.
