A lot of people use broken up egg shells on beds and pathways to deter slugs with the sharp edges.

If you are cooking shell fish, like mussels, cockles, prawn etc. and have shells left over, rather than bin them put them to use - chuck them in the ashbox of a fireplace.

After they are baked dry then just break them up and apply like egg shells.
Mussels break up like eggs, so are good for beds.

More heavy duty shells like crab claw's etc. are good on pathways.
