Hey, quick question – had my car serviced the other day (Peugeot 308) and the guy in Advance Pitstop told me I need new brake pads and discs. Now I don’t now the first thing about cars but from some googling I’ve been doing what I was quoted seems a lot so just wanted to double check here….
He quoted me E220 for front pads and discs (BG3620 and LP1679 if they mean anything to anyone?) and E210 for rear (BG3653 and LP565). Am I being robbed or is this about right?
    Thanks in advance!!

Doesn't sound too bad to me. From Advance Pitstop anyway

i would go to a independent car mechanic and get a second opinion/quote and see what they have to say etc as you never know could save you a few bob etc

disc would be about E100 per set pads from about E25 min. so does seems pretty good to me if price includes fitting and parts, would nearly cost you more in hassle to do yourself between ordering parts collecting and fitting

it's quite an easy job to do yourself if you anyway handy. Wheel off, usually 2 bolts to move the caliper out of the way and the remove old disc and slide on new one (simplified version). Pads are even easier. Could be a good time to learn, and save a few bob too. Maybe give the local motor factor a ring and see how much the discs are, should be well less than €100

Thanks a mill for the replies, appreciate it.
Will give a quick ring around and see what I'm being quoted but obviously its not daylight robbery judging by your responses so Im happy enough!
    Cheers again!!

If it's any help for you those are Delphi (Lockheed) part numbers.
You may go to micksgarage or eurocarparts to compare the price.
The price is with service or "parts only"?

You don't have to change discs every time you change pads. Discs are (usually) only changed when worn, warped or damaged.
Check disks to see if there is a significant lip along the outer rim.
    Does brakes "pulse" when braking?

thanks for that PrzemoF, will check them out. Price includes labour. Will prob just go back to them, nice guys.
Nah I'd say the lot needs to be replaced, its a 2004 and dont think its ever been done. The car squeaks when i break - I presume this is why?

    Could simply be vibration :)
Wouldn't be an indicator of actual wear unless it's the wear indicator is making to noise. They'd want some neck to reckon you need pads and discs all round if you actually don't. Might be worth running your finger over the disc edges (when they are cool) to see are they lipped though before getting it done.

They will be lipped to some degree, but they would need to be pretty bad before you need to replace the discs.

My 03 Focus has 135k and the original discs, and got 180k out of another set on a different car, but then I tend to view braking as something you only do in emergencies!

I paid 47 euro for back brake discs for my Mazda 626 from C&F motor factors in Dublin.
    Pads were about 40.
It might take about an hour to do yourself if you have the tools. You don't need too much. The right socket set, a stand to support the car when it's up and the parts.

Shop around anyway. The price quoted seems a little expensive.

Peugeot are probably the worst cars out there for brake disc wear. Any peugeot around that age will have a good big lip on the discs. It probably has a good lip on it being a 04'. A big lip will cause your brake pads to strike metal long before they would on new discs.

irishautoparts shows the front discs for a 308 1.6 being €30 each(€60 for the axle).

These kinds of places are well known for telling anyone who gets a service that they need new discs+pads, and charging an arm and a leg for them.

    ****CAREFUL****

Those b*stards in the tyre centre's are money grabbers & they tell every customer that they need new brake pads & discs because they are instructed to by upper management. 3/4 of them aren't even trained mechanics & it's a disgrace that our minister for transport is allowing tyre centre's to do brakes, timing belt's, etc. & taking away from the garagemen who are fully trained and slog day to day to have this done to them.

Get your local mechanic to double check this & it will be a cheaper experience!!!

Discs and pads for the front wheels of my 1990 Prelude cost 90 euro from a motor factors, fitted them myself in under an hour. Easy job to do ! I was quoted 65 euro for a pair of rear discs and 32 for the pads so the price you were quoted isn't extortionate but you could save yourself about 200 euro by doing them yourself if you feel up to it !

When braking, what is the pulsing from?

    warped disc

It's worth adding that vibration under braking can also be caused by play in the suspension (worn bushings/ball joints). I'd get the wheel off the ground and give it a shake to check for play before getting the discs checked/replaced.

There you go, did a good job shopping around, saved a few quid. Still a few of us wouldn`t have paid even that much-I paid 170pounds incl shipping for a full set of discs and pads-but you had the balls to admit that you are not able to change them by yourself.
At the end of the day, you saved some money and all that matters, well done.

As a side note, rear discs are start to wear a lot later because when braking the balance and weight of a car moves forward, therefore front brakes wear quicker and they usually bigger compared to the rear ones. ;)
