It's one of them old bulky tv's. Is it always the case with the old tv's that satellite and aerial signals will intefere like this?

You need to change the rf out frequency of the free sat box to something that the aerial channels aren't using, then re-tune the tv to find the free sat box.
Or just use a scart if the tv has a scart socket.
