The car was bought on 8 of April in Dublin, the dealer claims that he sent the cert on 11 of April, motortax.ie -> "vehicle transaction enquiry" shows nothing, an automatic reply after phone call to motortax office says that they have no outstanding certs. Is that normal or I should try to find out where is the cert now?

Not normal, usually they are very good & have it out within 10 working days....I'd chase up with them....

That explains a lot - thanks! I hope I'll not have to explain on the road why I don't have tax disc :D

I bought a car on the 13th of april and got cert on 21th of april so i think it all depends on how soon the dealer sends in cert

i bought my car on the 1st april but didn't get the cert til the 21st, and I think there's 2 reasons behind that!

    1. I wasn't home when the car was delivered (I was sitting exams at the time) and the dealer rushed my mom through the form so she ended up signing it in the wrong place, which meant that even though the Motor Tax Office received it on the 7th, they sent it back to me to sign in the right place. I signed it and sent it back on the day I received it, the 10th and waited....and waited...and waited....

    2. Eventually, a week after I had sent back the signed form, I rang the Motor Tax Office, because the form had almost definitely reached there in the 7 days I'd waited, but there was no change noted on the Motor Tax website when I made a Vehicle Transaction Enquiry. I explained that I'd addressed it directly to the person who'd sent it back, and after a bit of humming and hawing I was told it hadn't come in yet but "maybe it came in in this morning's post.....we'll ring you back". Miracle of miracles, I got a phone call saying it was in that morning's post (7 days for a letter to reach a destination within the State? I don't think so!) and the database had been updated and the cert was in the post. I finally got the cert 2 days later!

I'd definitely chase up the Motor Tax Office, they seem to "not receive" post within even a generous timeframe, but a quick phonecall did the trick for me!

I just tried a phonecall - no luck. I gave up after 10 minutes on hold.

Update: the motor tax office is a ghost office - even the recepion is empty!!!

I tried to call again; it's impossibe to talk to a real person and "we're processing documents from last working day".

    The funniest part:
Answering machine: Is there anything else that I could do for you?
    Me: Yes.
AM: Sorry, I didn't understand it. Please wait, I'll contact the reception.
    Beeeep, beeeeep
You choosen wrong option, please call 1890 411 412 and choose from available options.
    Beep, beep, beeep....

(The text might not be 100% correct)

Looks like I have to stick to the photocopy that I have. I'll try again in June.
