haggling with dealers?

I'm looking at buying a car for around the €4000 mark. There are loads of cars advertised by dealers for 4500/4995 that i would be interested in but my budget is max 4k

Is it worthwhile haggling with the dealer to get the price down to 4k?

I have a car that I could trade in, but would prefer to keep and sell privately.

The way I see it is 4k is at a level that should allow for a trade in of a lesser car (that dealers don't really want) so they jack up the asking price to pretend that the trade in is worth more

If I buy as a cash sale how much can I realistically expect knocked off a 4995 car?

Would it be worthwhile to offer to waive any warranty and buy it as seen (on basis that the dealer will only offer a warranty on cars that they have a reasonable level of confidence in)

Are there any tips that people can give me to try and get the best deal from a dealer?

Doubt if you would get a dealer down from nearly 5k to 4k but its worth a shot.

Every car is different and it depends on if the car was a trade-in and what car went the other way as to how much leeway the salesman has.You should be able to pick up how desperate they are to sell the car and drive the hardest bargain you can from that.

    It's been done :)
Varies on a car to car and dealer to dealer basis though, no hard and fast rules.

all depends on how much the dealer wants to get rid of car....

    each car is different

The tide has turned !! Make the dealer an offer and tell him to ring you when he is ready to dea ! For a long time the car dealers hadn't the time to deal with second hand buyers , now they are looking out those huge forecourt windows waiting for em :D:D:D

Not judging by the stories I have heard lately

OP most I got was a few hundred off my last one - worth a go but I doubt you'll get a whole grand off

I've spoken to a lot of dealers in the last few weeks and there is a massive difference between their attitudes towards buyers at the lower end of the market. Some of them just couldn't be bothered and won't even discuss price, while others are keen to do a deal.

Does anyone have any specific tips on the best ways to get a dealer to come down in price?

I got €700 off a €2950 screen price last August. As said it varies car to car and dealer to dealer. I'd agree that it's unlikely to get a grand off but €4500 to €4000 is well do able.

I was buying recently - I found most dealers unwilling to take off more than a couple of hundred quid for cash.

One character had his car priced at €x,000 which I said was over my budget but I'd be happy to pay a cost to change of €y,000. At this time I was looking to trade in. I checked his website a week later and he'd put his price down by a grand which brought the price to €y,000 on the figure he'd given me for my car.

I went back to him and he told me nope, for you ('your car') the price is still €x,000.

    Goodbye !

If you cant' get much movement on the asking price its worth trying to deal on other things that could save you money - ask for a longer warranty period etc.

That's what a few of them have said to me, One fella said the cash price is 3500 but if you're trading in a car, it's 4200. basically, if I was offered 700 quid trade in value on my old car, I would have been giving the car away for free.

Oh yeah they often do this in the form of offering you a better cash price which is ok, but if they are increasing the car because you want to trade in then they are not sticking to the advertised price of the car which would be false advertising. Surely? He has decreased the advertised price - therefore that should also apply to the trade in price. I'd definitely report that

No it's not false advertising, the screen price was less than a week previous but Reloc8's cost to change was not any less than it was.

If i could rob this thread for a moment :o

Brother is looking at a 08 mondeo 1.8 TDCI for 14250....his budget is 13,000. It's an english import so has all the extras on it.

Should he be able to get it on or even better under budget?

I doubt it unless there's a huge lash of miles on it.

after going through the hassle of importing it and vrting it, and the fact its probably a rare example in ireland, i imagine the dealer will want to keep their profit margin as high as poss

If they reduced the advertised price but did not reduce the price to this one customer then surely that is false advertising.

Eh no, it's not. I am sure they would sell the car to the customer at the new advertised price.
