Saw a Sony Freeview HD Twin Tuner for sale in a Sony shop today. It was a 500GB and retailed for less than £300 which I thought was quite reasonable. I presume this would pick up Saorview, digital text and all so I'm thinking of purchasing this. Do others think this is a resonable price and a good buy?

I am very tempted to buy this but still not sure if it will give me Freeview and Saorview with one epg. Was told in a shop today that to get both Freeview and Saorview I may have to input UK at beginning of process to get Freeview channels, then delete these and input ROI to get Saorview and that I mightn't be able to get both systems at the same time. Is this correct? Anyone have any experience of this Twin Tuner? The model no. is SVR - HDT 500.

do a bit of research and note this has a very noisy fan. you could email sony support but with most boxes you have a manual facility so do an auto first then see what you pick up. if no saorview go manual and insert the broadcasting frequency for saorview for where you are etc. I am going to wait as RTENL are messing at the moment.

Just to update. I e mailed Sony and got this reply -

    Dear Mr Gilpin
Thank you for your recent e-mail received on 12/06/2011 06.07 PM. I am pleased to read that you are interested in purchasing a Sony SVR-HDT500 Recorder. I have looked into your enquiry and I regret to tell you that this recorder will not work with the Saorview service in Ireland.
I have posted a link below to all Sony products that will work in Ireland
    http://www.saorview.ie/products-retailers/saorview-approved-product-listings/sony/
I am sorry I cannot be of greater assistance on this occasion, however I hope that my e-mail has gone some way to clarify this matter.
    Yours sincerely

Sony shops are selling the SVRHDT 500 for 339 euro so I presume it will work well here. I am thinking of getting this or else the humax HDR-Fox T2 depending on how cheap the Humax can be got. Has anyone used the Sony and is the unit as noisy as said in another post and is it easy to use. The fan on the Humax only runs if it overheats this seldom happens from what I read

Will be very interested to hear about this considering e mail Sony sent me. esp. if anyone can get both Saorview and Freeview on it.

What part of Ireland do you live in

I'm a bit of a novice when it comes to this sort of thing but i presume these boxes are just for picking up saorview channels?

I take it one would need a different box for satellite?

I live in Moira, Co. Down (just off M1 motorway and c18 miles from Belfast) and pick up Saorview from Clermont Carn (sound but no picture) without any breakup. Great for listening to ROI radio stations but would like to get picture as well and be able to record. BTW my analogue from CC is crystal clear. I have a Triax 52 element aerial with masthead amp. Moira has lots of RTE aerials dotting the skyline.
Regarding satellite this box is only for Digital terrestial and you need a separate dish and box for satellite.
If this box does not do Saorview it will probably sit on shop shelves a while here in NI as Freeview HD will not arrive here until DSO in late 2012 AFAIK. Only advantage at present is twin tuner for Freeview but other PVR's AFAIK have this feature already e.g. Humax.

I Guess your Terrestrial box is only SD as I think a HD box would get Saorview with sound and vision . The Humax and Sony boxes have a HD model so they should get both freeview and Saorview

Problem is e mail from Sony customer services (post#9) which says otherwise. See also - http://www.boards.ie/vbulletin/showthread.php?p=73150669 (post#6). Quoting part of it - "there are no integrated HDD twin tuner PVRs with Saorview certification."

PEATS HAVE THE SAME SONY BOX 384 euros IS IT ANY GOOD OR IS THE HUMAX FREEVIEW HD BOX BETTER

Saw this for sale in Curys for £329. Notice the store now has "Saorview campatable" marked against certain products. Must check this the next time I'm in.

There is no such thing as 'Saorview compatible'. It is either certified, or it is not. If it is not certified, Saorview will be calling on them to remove their name from the product. Saorview claim to be very hot on this issue.

I bet they are at the rumored 20,000 euro fee for certification they will chase anybody. If you buy in Ireland and are told it will work on all Saorview required functions I don't see too many problems as you can always bring it back as unfit for purpose to the store if it doesn't work.

That is not the point. Saorview do not get any of the €20 grand as far as I know. The certification allows them to wash their hands of any problems with uncertified sets, and I beleive that was the intention for the strict certification policy. Note that their immediate response is always to require a certified product. They are also quite definite in their policy of not mentioning Freesat as a viable way of getting UK TV. As far as they are concerned, they have no satellite service and are not aware of any satellite service that may or may not be available. Pontius could learn a thing or two from them.

I have this model over the past 3 years and it is MPEG-2 SD only, so no Saorview TV channels on this, just radio channels.
Damm good box, great for timeshifting and automatically set the next time slot if been change by broadcaster
Saving up for the HD version and waiting for Divis to change next year to Freeview HD
