I've decided to make the bold move to PS3 from XBOX360. Can someone answer the following if they can...

I'll only need it for playing COD so will i need more that a 40GB one?
Whats the difference between the fat and slim one?
What's the most i should be paying?
What should i be looking out for?

    Thanks in advance

Since it's only for COD - 40GB is fine - the 40GB is the phat version.

Personally I would stay away from the phats - starting to get old now so possibly more problems. Don't touch a refurb - my opinion.
New versions come in 160GB and 320GB - iirc.

I don't know what they cost new, but yahoo smyths et al for a price.

no any size hard-drive will work, there are very little differences in the slimline and original ps3 other than the look and a few things like hardrive and maybe ports but they both do all the same things. i dunno how much you should be paying it all depends if you're buying second or first hand but i think maybe 250...
although i love the ps3, as seen in the other thread the psn(playstation network) is under cyber attack and hasn't recovered over the past couple of days so i would wait a little while before rusing out and buying one.
at least until everything calms down.

The phat version is a lot more prone to breaking and getting YLOD in comparison to the slim.Try to buy new so you can get some sort of a guarantee.

As an owner of a phat 60gb that got YLOD 4 times I'm also thinking of purchasing a slim.

Don't waste your money on anything but the newest slim models 160/320GB. Unless you can get a 40GB fat for under €60-70. The risk of a YLOD is just too great with the older models imo.

HMV has a three year extended warranty for €30 AFAIK.

Don't bother with the extended warranty. It is only in addition to your statutory rights. If your ps3 breaks after a year and your warranty is up you are 100% entitled to a repair, refund or replacement. It works like this, a item has an expected lifetime and for a game console that costs over 250 euro I would put a 5 or 6 year life expectancy on it if not more (NES, Snes and sega consoles are still working now) so you would be perfectly entitled to take it up with the shop if it broke after warranty.

I know about the SOG but it doesn't seem to work. No one would pay Sony €160 for a refurbish, if the retailer was taking SOG seriously.
