    Hi all,
I have seen a few 09 Ford Focus 1.6 petrol models (1.6 style) for approximately 11-12k recentlly. The cars have only 30k miles. Just wondering what peoples opinions are on this price?

80% of my driving is done on a 5k piece of road from Limerick City to work and apparently a petrol car is pretty good for this anyway.

I was mulling over a 17k diesel and apart from tax per year, I'm not sure is a diesel worth the extra money?

If your mileage is small and mainly city the only con is the higher road tax. 5-6k saving more than negates that. Try get a Zetec spec or higher as it will have some nice extras.

    Here are the specs...
ABS Brakes / Airbags (Multiple) / Alloy wheels / Bluetooth Connectivity / Colour Coded Bumpers / Colour Coded Handles / CD Player / Central Locking / Cupholders / Electronic Stability Program ( / Electric Windows (Front) / Electric Mirrors / Front Fog Lights / Height Adj Steering / Height Adj Drivers Seat / Immobiliser / Metallic Paint / Metallic Paint/ MP3/AUX Input / Quickclear Front Windscreen / Remote Central Locking / Rear Head Rests / Remote Radio Controls / Trip Computer

I do about 6000 miles per year.

You'll basically get air con and a nicer interior with the zetec or above. Worth hunting one out. If I was in your position I'd buy a petrol focus for the use you mention.

There are a few 08 zetecs within a similar price range. I might look around a bit more.

When I saw the low mileage and low price, I became a little suspicious tbh. Just wondering if this model had any issues!

In general they are quite a good car. No major issues that Im aware of.

Zetec for the most part was made redundant from 09 as the Style got upgraded with air con, bluetooth, alloy wheels, etc. Petrol engine Foci suffered hugely under the change in tax from engine to emmissions in 2008. 2009 1.4 and 1.6 litre petrol models are both in Tax band D meaning they cost €445 to tax per year.

If you are doing small mileage then avoid buying a diesel and they don't like short trips. As everyone is gone low tax diesel mad these days there should be plenty of bargining power when buying a 09 petrol model, the purchase price savings over a similar diesel Focus will buy you many years of slightly higher motor tax.

The reason they have low prices is because they are petrol which are out of fashion with average Joe who wants diesel because they are cheap to tax.

Yeah , I think that the diesel is better if you are doing long runs. Also I believe you would need to be doing a minimum of 15 k per year to justify having one. In my experience the modern diesels while much more zippy and faster to drive are a good bit more finicky. Quality of diesel is also very important on these and my own Mondeo was stopping and not starting so well recently. This was apparently due to dodgy diesel.

Thanks for all the replies guys...more are welcome!

The other cost I need to factor in is the devaluation. The petrol seems to have devalued a huge amount already (11k for a 09 petrol style vs 16k for a 09 diesel style).

Looking at keeping the car for a 3 year period, any educated guesses as to which car would devalue more?

Honestly, given my driving needs, I don't think I can go wrong a 09 petrol 1.6 for 11.5k. But I have this feeling I am missing a glaring point!

    Hi again,
Ok I have decided to buy this car in the morning.

    http://www.cavanaghs.com/used-cars/ford-focus-2009-unleaded/275121.aspx

The price is below 11800, it's a very well specced 1.6 style and has 18k miles on clock. One owner, and has had 2 services, the last of which was a few weeks ago. No problems with the car. Taxed until the end of the year.

I have done all the checks as stated on the great sticky here and everything about the car seems great. Took it for an extended test drive and runs very smoothly.

As mentioned, the petrol engine suits my driving (mentioned above) and it has most of the extras I want from a zetec.

Apart from the usual questions mentioned in the sticky, anything else I should be asking? Last minute jitters :o

    Good deal?

    11k for a 2 year old Focus.

    Thats a good deal imo.

I had the 1.6 petrol 2010 one as a rental car in poland and found it grand, good little engine with character, very comfortable and great to drive, with really sharp steering, decent on fuel too for a petrol.

Only thing I didn't like coming from bigger engine cars was the gearbox, only being a 5 speed. It was a bit noisy and high up the revs at motorway speeds and could have done with a 6th gear, besides that it was great. Not a fast car, but i had fun in it.You dont do long journeys so I doubt you even notice the 6th gear.

Best of luck with it anyway.Im sure you will be very happy with it.

Not unusual to get last minute jitters :D Very small mileage on the car and should last for many years. Enjoy it !!:p

Looks a nice car. Does it have aircon? Cavanaghs are fine they'd stand over the warranty. Not much should go wrong anyway. Enjoy it!

Edit: looking at the spec I presume it does!

Yeah , most of the later focus have Aircon, previously they only had it on ghia models. Ford do a super aircon on the focus.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 51,364 ✭✭✭✭bazz26

Air con was only standard on Zetec, Ghia and Titanium models upto 2008. MY08 Style did not have air con as standard. From 2009 it was pretty much standard across the range.

Hard to tell from the photos if it has air con but one of the two buttons above the heater dials should have A/C written on it. Not mentioned in the equipment list either. Looking at the low reg number for 09 LK it is possible that the car is a MY08 Style and doesn't have it.

Hi all no it does not have aircon but to be honest I'm not all that pushed. Aircon in my 00 focus is opening windows :-p. It wad reg in feb09 but I reckon it's an 08. The windows are all marked 08 and i found a sticker in boot that says 08. It has alloys, integrated bluetooth, and all the extras I currently want.

The guy that owned the car previously kept very good care.

    Excited now :-)
