Lidl have a portable generator on sale this Thursday for €229.
What do people think? would it be a good buy or stay clear of it?

It all depends on what you want to use it for and where.

At the moment it will be used to work an angle grinder or a electric drill.

More than enough power for that. Don't know much about these or prices but it looks like the real deal.

As said will be fine for that.

€40 more for a brand new machine with a 3 year warranty.

Though I suppose generators don't get too much abuse, do they generally have a service history?

They aren't Chinese muck, Aldi/Lidl only sell products which pass the German TuV tests. Chinese muck will fail.

In general, I would agree with your line of thought, but those Honda engines really are exceptional.

November 2012 Bought a Parkside 2.8 KVA generator €199 from (Lidi) did all the necessary , oil , petrol fill etc... ran it in for an hour .... ran it again for an hour a day later ..... pulled it out for Christmas ... ran it for 30 minutes ... plugged in the Christmas lights ... No power.....

capacitor failed... looks at hand book.... it tells me "See dealer" back to lidi gets my money back

Goes to local Harrison dealer get's a 3.5 KVA for €221 Works for me.
