I don't know much about insurance at all, so a few quick questions. For a male driver 21, 1 yrs ncb would it be possible (if willing to take a massive hike in quote) to get insured on any of these cars and how doesthe system generally work.

BMW 3 Series 1.9 or 2.5 litre petrol
    Focus ST 2.5 litre
    BMW 6 Series 4.4 litre
    BMW 7 Series 4.4 litre

I am aware that they might sound ridiculous but if I was willing to pay through the nose insurance wise could I get a policy on any of them?

    So your toying with the idea of a 1.9 3 series or a 4.4 7 series?:D:D

You can get insurance on anything, but imagine your "massive hike", "through the noise" figure and multiply it by 10, with a huge excess.
2.0 ltr is probably feasible, but i cant see any of the above being worth the cost to a 21yr old.

you need more details to get a proper quote but for somebody aged 21 living and using the car in Dublin with one years no claims and a full licence for the focus st i got a quote of 4,300 you could get quite a decent car for that imho so i dont see a point getting one of those cars just yet

Riddler afaik you have to be given insurance on any car even that was for a 17yr old in a Veyron, however expect Veyron like money! The 3 series 1.9 seems like the best bet, either that or try get under the wing of a willing parent etc. as a named driver.

A newer 3 series or an older 7 series! What can I say I have a soft spot for Beemers. What age does the insurance come down to something remotely payable?

For mine, it was 25yr old and 3 years no claims before my insurance took a big jump down, that might have changed.

I got insured as a named driver last year for €440 on a e36 316 when I was 23. The feckers want €680 next month but I'm changing vehicle and it will rocket upwards again probably.

My father has a company car but it doesn't allow him to keep his NCB valid so he insures mine allowing his NCB to stay valid and me to save a fortune in the process! You lose your full no claims bonus if you haven't had insurance in your own name for three years.

    When you're a male? somewhere around 30 or 40...

ST would be the best shot I'd say, not as big an engine, and probably very few insurance claims against them...

Nononsense.ie is quite cheap for a 2.5L. Not sure if they insure bigger than 3ltr though. You could give them a call and see.

I'm 21 and my insurance on a 1.6 16v Vectra (100bhp) is €1200. I was wondering how feasible it is to upgrade to something like an A4 1.8T (150-163bhp) and the online FBD system gives me a quote of €1050. I put in the reg of one that's for sale on donedeal so they have all the relevant info.

Is this accurate? Or when I actually call them will it be inflated? Also I have heard people say "You cant get insured on bla bla bla" Can an insurance company refuse somebody insurance even if they have perfect no claims etc etc just because of age?

If they gave you the quote and you gave all the correct details about yourself ie. penalty point no claims etc they're entitled to insure you for that price by law

Ok thats good! So if the online system doesn't panic at the sight of the car, and they give you a quote and a reference number all is well?

I heard stories of people in my age bracket buying cars and being point blank refused insurance and being up sh*t creek...

As far as i'm aware thats the story anyway. but all the details have to be correct if you come along when you ring them and say, oh no actually i have penalty points thats a different story your the person that breached the contract between the you and the insurance company.

It has changed. I'm 26, 3 years ncb, full licence 3 years, just got my renewal for a 1.4 mkiv golf and it's 800. It only drops maybe 75-80 a year, pain in the ass. I was considering a gti, vrs or Leon fr, something a bit more fun, but the gti is 1800 and the vrs 1200, just can't justify it. I've rang lots of places but the only way I can get it below 800 is to go for 3rd party or bump up the excess to ridiculous levels..

did you try insure.ie i went to then and got my insurance on a 1.8 celica to 683 or something like that. i'm 23 with 4 years no claim and full for 3 with 4 points on top of that. i find the renewal quotes are ridiculous and if you go back to the same company as a new customer you get the quote for alot cheaper i don't understand it.

Tried them earlier and they wanted 840. I don't think it helps I live and use the car in Dublin 24, seems it's a high risk area. Spoke to the AA today and got it for 720, including a years aa membership, and all the bells and whistles that no nonsense weren't offering, (ncb protection, glass cover, driving in eu, hire car, driving other cars, personal possessions etc..) oh yeah and the excess is €190 compared to no nonsense's €1000

It's a joke, my missus wrote off her car 2 years back and claimed for it and damage to another car, same age and driving experience, and shes paying half of that, she also has me as a named driver which brings it down a bit, but I can't have her as a named driver because of the claim.

Ya nononsense are a complete job. I couldn't get it with AA either which is a pity. i wouldn't have minded them they're worth the extra few pound with the membership.

Ya what makes it worse with these new laws its going to be the womens insurance that comes up and not the mens going down
