So like some people things are a bit tight at the moment. Really wanted to make today a nice day for the family. So i brought packed up a picnic and brought them on off to altamount gardens.

What a great place. Picnic tables, lovely walkways, fab peacocks and a whole afternoon spent enjoying time with my family and it cost me nothing!!! I really think it is fantastic that the owners of this do all this for free and feel they deserve alot of credit (and publicity) for providing this great venue for everybodys enjoyment.

So a big thanks altamount you made me and my family very happy and gave us a great day out

Thanks for that Rasco - I wondered did they charge going in. What is the easiest way to get there from Carlow.

    P.S. - I love the signature

It's under the care of the State, it's run and maintained by the Office of Public Works; and indeed it is a credit to them, they do some great work.

Out the Wexford road, go through Ballon. Just follow the signs for it, its in on the left.

It really is a fantastic place, make sure to take the forest walk down to the Slaney River.

    I have to agree,

Great Place and being Free in is like a cherry on top. :)

While we're at it, I'll also give a shout out to Discovery Park in Castlecomer.
Just back from it now, All the kids had a great time, (Adults too)

Its Free in - Great Playground for the kids - Lovely forest/river walks and picnic areas everywhere, They even have BBQ area's set-up for public use

I know they do charge for the Mine tours but I've never availed of that so can't comment.

Talks of the house opening to the public at some stage. Would be fantastic!

I think they should leave it the way it is as it is only a matter of time before they start to charge under some guise . The main thing about Altamount is that it is FREE and should stay that way. We were robbed of the use of Oak Park by heathen Scientists and then the council gave Jimmy Burke the freedom of the town for giving the council a boggy fly infested wood.

The house is definitely worth seeing. Definitely worth paying for too.

Lovely gardens and splendid house .Was in side the house years ago and it was lovely.many original features in it .Is there something going on with "squatter rights" ?.Is this why nothing has been done to the house by the O.P.W.?
