I am looking to buy a 08 economical diesel large saloon or estate. I want to know whats the best buy from low road tax, mileage economy, resale, extras like ac and cc etc. Decent Bhp also. I have a high spec 05 Mondeo zetec 130 which has everthing you would want from a drivers perspective. I am considering buying in UK as spec seems higher at a better price than here. Would consider another mondeo, Zetec or higher, passat 140, Mazda 6 etc. Is there better value high spec cars to consider, Ie maybe laguna, c5s etc/

If you're thinking Mazda 6, then it needs to be the newer 2.2 diesel. Very few around from 08, most came on stream in 09.
But I second the Legacy idea.

Much as they're over suggested, an octavia vrs from the uk would be worth considering. Friend got one recently for a really good price. Legacys went up in price new so used ones are pretty dear.
The mondeo 130 is alovely drive, any newer car will need 150hp at least to compare.

How about a skoda superb? If you are looking at a passat then this would be surely the comparable skoda?

Legacy or Octavia VRS or if they're to boy racerish for you get an Avensis. Bar the recall issue, toyota are a sound car & will keep running by the time your great grand children are scraping it with bicycle handle bars in your drive way.

The avensis 125 is a world away from an old model
    130 mondeo.

Had not considered legacy as think they may out of budget. Looking at new model mondeo Titanium x 140. How do tyhey compare with the zetec 130. Avensis are nice but dont like the look since they brought the newer one out. Keep the ideas coming. All help appreciated. cant see any Mazda 6 from 08 on 2.2 engines around.

Didn't want to suggest any of the skoda options as I'm sure the OP wouldd be well aware of them from these forums

Skoda vrs definately an option. dont seem to be a lot of them available though. Honda gone into the more expensive side then again. Definately narrowing it down though. Any feedback on new model 08 mondeo high spec?

I'm contemplating selling my MK5 GTI and getting a Skoda Vrs. Cargiant have two, black and grey. Only thing stopping me is the hassle and the fact i love my GTI so much and i might regret it but i'm doing silly mileage at the moment plus i fancy a change. I already know a couple of people interested if i do sell my car.

What are you doing with your old mondeo OP?

Its just been serviced, 2 new tyres, going for a valet and going on the market. Trade in value of about €5000 but will bw sold for less if I buy privately especially in Uk again. Members are right though definately have to go up in BHP to match this powerful diesel. Will eat passat 130's

Be careful with a UK vRS. The Irish ones are higher spec believe it or not;)

EPM. Wow thats a first in my book. interesting though. Still a large saving to be made on uk ones.

I agree. The yellow is the worst looking car ever. Seen a white one recently possibly sprayed. looked well with vrs graphics on side also. Some silver ones around

Here is a UK spec vRS, minus the climate control, auto lights and wipers.

They don't look nice in red either.
