Bought New Galaxy S . .

    Hi All,

Im completely new to Android phones so could appreciate any help/advice. I bought a new Galaxy S which I will receive on Tuesday.

I currently use an Iphone and will be looking to have a similar setup on my new Android, but I hear it can be a little bit of work figuring out how to set things up.

Is there any way of moving my phone contacts to the new phone ? My Iphone is locked and I am moving netork providers so I am not even sure if my current sim will work on the new phone. I dont even know where to view my contacts on Itunes (if that is indeed where you can view them!).

I have loads of music (including bought music) and applications on Itunes. Is there anyway of transfering this to the new Galaxy S or do I have to buy everything again ?

I have loads of photos on my Iphone. I presume the best thing to do is just save them to PC ?

Any other tips to help an Iphone crossover like myself would be appreciated.

    Hi Drumpot,

Welcome to the dark side :D

It's been a long time since I've had an iPhone but I'll try to help.
If you sync your iPhone your contacts should be in your address book, there you can export these contacts to a CSV file.

To get your contacts to your android phone you can do a few different things, if your Galaxy is unlocked than you can stick your old sim card and save them to the phone.

With my HTC i had the choice to send my contacts over a Bluetooth connection, but I'm not sure if Samsung provide that.

Since android phones sync with your google account, you can import that CSV file to your G-mail account. If you don't have google account it's recommended you create one ;).
In the contacts section on G-mail you can chose to import a CSV file from your computer.

When your phone syncs with your google account the contacts should be viewable on the phone, this is probably the best method as it make it provides a back up of your contacts and can be useful for switching to another phone.
Here is a useful webpage, you might find interesting. http://support.apple.com/kb/ht1245

As for transferring your music and application. I'm sure your music is stored on files in the computer , when the galaxy is connected via USB cable you can simple drag and drop the music to a music folder on the phone.

As for your applications, unfortunately your can transfer them to the Samsung as they two different operating systems:(. you can view and purchase android apps through the phone or the website.

As for the photos you can just use the same technique as transferring the music. Save them to the computer and then drag and drop to the phone.

There's also a thread on the must have android applications, it can give you few ideas :D

When you get your phone and need any help on an off the above , lets us know. Other boardies did it for me :p

Good luck with the move! It will take some getting used to, but hopefully you will get on well with the SGS. First thing you need to do is set up a Google account - if you use gmail already you can use this.

Unfortunatly Android does not really manage media in the same way that iOS/iTunes does. There is no 'one-stop-shop' for interacting with your phone.

    1) Contacts - Save them as Google contacts, they will sync to the GoogleCloud and then appear on your Android when you sync is with google OTA (over the air) for the first time.
    2) Apps - Out of luck here I am afraid. None of your iOS apps will run on the SGS. Some of the apps will be available on Android Market (the Android version of the App Store) but by no means all.
    3) Music - Sync this with your PC/Mac. Then download a programe called "doubleTwist" it looks and works a lot like iTunes, so is a good place to start. It will help you to move music, media, etc from your PC to your Android device.
    4) Photos - again sync them back to your PC and you can "drag and drop" them onto your new handset.

Try it and see how you go. You have 14 days to take it back, if it does not work out.

I'd be interested to learn if the newer SGS's are shipping with Android 2.3 (aka the SGS Plus)

I'd never even heard that they were going to market it differently. Wonder if there will be any other improvements beyond just upgrading to 2.3. Noticed that they're including the upgraded battery of "Standard battery, Li-Ion 1650 mAh" rather than 1500....

    Edit: and upon looking closer

1.4 GHz Scorpion processor, Adreno 205 GPU, Qualcomm MSM8255T Snapdragon

This seems a good link for explaining how to move contacts from iPhone, via iTunes to Gmail.

Pay particular attention to the last step
Once you've checked that your contacts are available on the web, disable iTunes Contacts sync with Google. If you don't do this, you'll see duplicate contacts on your phone.

    Arrived today.

Thanks for tips. I have my contacts sorted.

I downloaded that Double twist programme however my laptop does not appear to recognise the phone (certainly doesnt show up on that double twist programme).

When I hook the phone upto the laptop in looks like its installing stuff ok and my phone says its connected. After instalation it gives me the option to close. When I disconnect and reconnect phone it looks like its trying to install the software again! Any advice would be greatly appreciated!

That's probably the KIES software it is trying to install. Best go online on your PC and manually install it by downloading the .exe file from the Samsung website. Check here

    Thanks for that.

Now I just need to figure out how to get the phone to connect to the pc. It still keeps trying to install itself!
