    Hi all,

Just looking for information about double-edged blades and razors.

I'm looking to buy one of these for the first time and want to know if the blades that are used are of a universal size, or if they vary between manufacturers?

Cheers SF, I knew there was somewhere better to ask this question. Could I request that a Mod move this to FH&H?

The double-edged razor blades are universal in shape and size and will work with any DE razor.

There was a time almost 100 years ago where different razor manufacturers
used different shaped blades and blades with different holes in them to try and control that people only used particular blades with specific razors but
those days are long gone and they now all use a standard blade shape/size.

    http://www.j-duwe.de/Rasierklingen/Rasierklingen.htm shows the evolution
of the Gillette blades. You can see how up to the late 1920s the Gillette blades only had three holes to hold them in place.

Whilst all modern blades are the same shape, they vary in sharpness and coating - if you're starting out your best bet is to try a sampler pack of different blades until you find one that suits you.

Unfortunately this is true. I get great results both with ASDA/Tesco own-brand blades (I believe these are unbranded Personna blades made in Israel) and with Japanese Feather blades which are said to be the sharpest you can get. Some other well-known brands like Gillette don't work for me; I cut myself with them even though I use the same touch and technique.
