My hair is well cut and coloured. I wash it every two days but it's never shiney. What products can you recommend to get sleek shiney hair?

I find the L'oreal Elvive Nutri-Gloss shampoo and conditioner good for giving my hair a shine.

That said, I don't colour/highlight/dye my hair so I don't know if this works on coloured hair, it might do.

There's these Pantene products, but I've never used them so don't know what they are like.

Don't blow dry and straighten your hair too much, other than that one of the best ways to get shiny hair is to eat well and not smoke, but I find not blow drying it is the biggest key. Hairdressers always comment on how naturally shiny my hair is and I it's definitely because I don't blow dry it, if I do it even once it feels more brittle and crappy.

i have to say maybe i'm completely wrong, but i always find my hair dull if i let it dry naturally and i think i have to wash it quicker

Rinse it with really cold water!

Could be lots of reasons. Your hair may be too dry, or maybe you have product buildup, or you have hard water which is causing a build up. Is it the same no matter where you wasj it? (I was in London last month and despite hotel shampoo my hair came out so shiny my dad - typical blind to all dad - commented on it, and I think it was a combo of different water and pathetic hairdryer)

try a clarifying shampoo to remove build up? ask your hairdresser if she thinks your hair is dry.

Pantene ice shine has always worked for me in the past. I also coloured my hair and used Live Colour XXL, it was harsh but gave it a nice shine.

Now I use coconut oil..great shine and makes my hair feel softer and healthier. Makes it look and feel full bodied and thicker even tho my hair really doesnt need to look any thicker!

I would recommend Moroccan Oil. Just pop a little bit in your hair after washing and blowdry / style as normal. It conditions your hair gives a lovely sleek shiny finish to your hair and I find blowdrying less of an effort when I use it.

    Here it is:

Have the shampoo and conditioner aswell and find it brill - they smell amazing also

    You can order from here:

I also quite like this product from Toni and Guy.

My hair is naturally very dry and tends to be dull so heres what I do -

    • I tried pantene and couldn`t believe the difference this cheap shampoo and conditioner made. I think they have this "10 days to beautiful hair" slogan on the bottle and for me it definetely worked.

    • Also if I don`t use the straighteners and just let it dry naturally it looks crap, but then you have people say straighteners ruin your hair for me its the exact opposite, my hair goes to bits if I don`t use them.

    • I also try to be gentle with my hair don`t brush to harshly.

    • I use to take this beauty oil thing (called beauty oil in some health food stores), you take a teaspoon a day and that gave my hair a lovely shine aswell as my skin and I eat avocado which I reckon helps.

    • I also sometimes put a good conditioner in overnight sometimes (typically the ones that come in the colours which are the best). People always comment my hair is shiny, but having black hair its easier to reflect light anyway.

The real message is - you have to find what works for YOUR hair, everyone is different.

If you dye your hair with henna rather than chemical dye it will have a great natural shine as henna is not only a dye but a conditioning treatment as well.

DON'T blow dry or straighten your hair! It ruins it! Every time I go to the hairdressers they comment on the condition of my hair, how shiny and sleek it is. That's because I very rarely blow dry it or straighten it.

Henna ftw as well though - it's amazing!

A cold water rinse after you wash it is good too - but it won't have any long term effect.

Maybe let it dry naturally the odd time when you know you're def staying in the house for a while?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 706 ✭✭✭Ilovelucy

Lots of tips there thanks. I usually leave it dry naturally then "fix" it with my straighteners. I have heard of the Moroccan oil so will give that a try. I just hate my dull looking hair. Would love to have it as shiney all the time.

Buy yourself JOICO shampoo and conditioner - they make my hair the glossiest its ever been. Especially the silk result shampoo - you will prob spend about 20 euro on the two but you dont have to use it all the time - just once a week or so.

I have to blow dry my hair every time I wash it or else it looks like a ball of frizz. I use kerastase blow dry products and aim the dryer down so it flattens the hair cuticle, which makes it look shinier. I also use kerastase or redken shampoo and conditioner which make a big difference too.

    cider vinegar
also gets rid of sebum and dandruff.

One great tip that my hairdresser gave me was to stay away from any products containing silicon, as it tends to give short term shine but weakens the hair over time. The frizz ease range from John Frieda is full of silicon so avoid it.

I love Kiehls porducts. They have this shampoo and conditioner range called Sunflower colour preserving shampoo & conditioner. It is pricey but amazing. After one wash my hair was so soft and healthy. Now I am a little addicted to it!! :)

That's gas, I find the opposite! Mine's way nicer when I let it dry naturally, but then mine's bleached so the hair dryer only dries it out more :o

Head and Shoulders shampoo is great for shiny hair but apparently strips your hair of colour. Pantene and Elvive are pretty good too.

Oh I do that :) I have it drying naturally and left in some extra moroccan oil this weekend!

I'm lucky to have really shiney hair, I've been stopped in the street a few times by randomners to see what I use:D. I don't think styling really has anything to do with it, I blowdry my hair with a really hot dryer nearly everyday and straighten it at least 3 or 4 days a week. My mum always dried my hair since I was tiny so I don't think it does any harm despite what the hairdressers say.

I have noticed though two occasions when my hair was dull though, one was when I was broke and travelling and lived on bread and coffee for about three weeks. I'd usually eat a lot of fruit and veg! The other was getting an up-do for a ball, loads of hairspray was used and I think that did it. I actually took it out and went straight to another hairdresser.

I think dark hair is always naturally shinier though.

yeah, naturally dark hair tends to be shiny. Mine's the same as yours, even though i blow dry a fair bit.

Also think dark thick hair tends to shine better. Can't think of anyone I know with shiny blonde hair, for instance. Bright blonde hair yes, but not glossy and shiny.

Believe straight hair looks more shiny than curly hair anyway because it catches the light better (flattened down follices etc).

Also I think your diet really reflects on your hair. The more stressed I am the cr&ppier my hair looks for example - it's like everything is conspiring against me..

But I do find Kerastase amazing, espc if my hair needs a boost. Generally though i think if you have used the one shampoo/conditioner for too long your hair just gets used to it. I tend to mix up my v expensive Kerastase products with that Tresemme stuff (cheap as chips). Few weeks of one, few weeks of the other etc.

Also, a good trim never goes astray. If you are carrying a lot of split ends they tend to defract the light.

An ex of mine used to get me to iron her hair with the normal clothes iron years ago and it used to shine it up alot, i think there are hair thongs women use for this now though.

Personally i find Moroccan Oil makes my hair greasy after 1 day even if i just use 1 pump. But I find their shampoo and conditioner are great for keeping hair shiny.

I also love Philip B Shin Shine spray which you can get in Space nk in Harvey Nicks...its really good at giving hair a lovely gloss + it strengthens hair too

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 621 ✭✭✭detoxkid

I have dry damaged highlighted hair and the only way it looks shiny and glossy is if I blow dry it to within an inch of it's life. As a result if i leave it natural it looks totally crap, I remember when my fiance moved in at first he was shocked to see what my real hair looked like :) It was a sign of true love that he stuck around.:D

I find redkin products much better than the shampoo or conditioners you get in the supermarket. Got massive bottles of it when in NYC for around 15 euro a bottle, it's worth stocking up when you are over in the states as they are crazy expensive over here.

My mum used to put olive oil in her hair. She would warm it up a little by rubbing it in her hands and then she would rub it into her hair. She would leave it in for a half an hour or so before she got in the shower.

Just don't go out in the sunshine or your hair might start frying!

Oh and don't put it on your roots as then they might get really greasy.

Nigella Lawson often calls olive oil the best (and most expensive) moisturiser!

 pretty sure my olive oil in the kitchen is FAR cheaper then any of my moisturisers.

silly nigella lawson, famous and married to saatchi, she must never buy olive oil herself....:pac:

I'm blessed with shiny hair, i've always washed it with lukewarm water rather than hot, as very hot water tends to lift the cuticles. Rinse with cold, cold water afterwards, and once every couple of months use olive oil as a treatment. I tend to dry my hair with a round brush and rarely use the GHD, and the only product i use is Boots Essentials range hair serum, which is less than €2.

A vinegar rinse is good for shiny hair, and beer is pretty good too, but you really need to rinse well afterwards if you don't want to end up smelling like a brewery/bag of chips!!

Hmm..payday is coming up so I might give the Kiehls shampoo a try :D

I use the L'Oreal Elvive Nutrigloss shampoo and conditioner, try not to blowdry or straighten when I can but some days it can't be avoided.

I have a hairdyer with an ionizer, had it for years now and pretty much took the whole ionizer thing for granted, didn't know whether it worked or not until I went back up home to my parents for a long weekend and the only hairdryer I had was a wee cheapo travel one I got in Lidl a few years ago. My hair was bone dry after just the first use and felt like straw :( all improved when I got back to my usual hairdryer again though.

Re: the point of non-shiny Blonde hair, I have a half-head of lights right now so not as blonde as I have been in the past, but my hair has always been shiny looking. Granted the shine is more noticeable when I leave it darker but still, I think if you take care of your blonde hair it can still be shiny :D

Using one of those purple shampoos for silver/grey/peroxide hair keeps it shiny and stops it getting brassy ;) Been using one since January now, stops it from having that orangey hue to it and makes it healthier looking.

Are there any products for shine that don't make fine hair go limp?

Or that even make it appear thicker without being greasy-looking?

God, I hate having fine hair. Looks crap no matter what I do because I can't get any shape to it without it going completely frizzy, which looks crap too! :(

  • Banned (with Prison Access) Posts: 1,405 ✭✭✭NewFrockTuesday

Moroccan Oil and the Babyliss Big Hair work for me. My hair tends to sit flat on top and frizz out from half way down - its shoulder length.

I put the oil in, blow dry upsidedown until nearly dry and then finish with the BBH. I spray a ton of hairspray on it to hold . And thats pretty much it. It takes about 30 mins to do every morning and Im thinking about getting the 3 month blow dry, but the reviews are saying thta its really bad for your hair.

One other thing, I had blonde highlights for years, but a year ago I switched to dark caramel with a few low and high lights to lift. Its far healthier now thats its not getting slaughtered with chemicals every 6 weeks.

I've really fine hair aswell and have been using this

Apple cider vinegar is the best!

    It truly is.

Just make sure you dont rinse out.

I mix one cup with four parts filtered water/rain water and add one or two drops of nice essential oil.

The smell goes when it drys and you are left with super shiny super soft hair.

    I promise!

I used to be the same, my hair is extremely fine. I use moroccan oil most days, and sometimes I will put on extra overnight on the nights before washing. Don't wash it every day or it really does go frizzy as hell.

Blowdrying serum into it, though this may not be very good for it.
The darker the colour the shinier it will look, though if you like your current colour, this might not be worth it.
