Back when I watched wrestling people I knew would dish out the usual slaggings, "thats sh!t" "fake" "retarded" You guys know the drill.

I was always of the opinion, if you actually watch it So in response I would force them to watch a certain match, usually Undertaker vs Mankind HIAC or Hogan vs The Ultimate Warrior or on the odd occasion one of the Vader vs Misawa matches. They always enjoyed them. Converted a few people.

Anyway, I was wondering if you could force one of these people to watch a specific wrestling show, ie any PPV, any episode of ECW, TNA, WWE, WCW etc which one would you pick and why? What one specific show/ppv do you feel is the shining light of what wrestling can be at its best? Which one is wrestlings best advertisement, top to bottom?

Personally I cant pick one.. I mean take those matches, great matches, but take them away from the PPV and what you are left with is kinda crap.

Back around 2003 my girlfriend at the time give me sh!t over watching wrestling so I made her watch Rock/Mankind I Quit match @ the Rumble 99. She couldn't bear to watch it and never badmouthed wrestling again.

Whenever someone gives me sh!t over wrestling, here's my mainstay comebacks :

    1) Do I give you grief for watching American Idol / You have the gall to say that while you watch that Coronation Street crap?

    2) (Make retard noise) You do realise that ALL of Television and movies are fake, right? Jack Bauer is just a TV character, Keifer Sutherland doesn't actually kill terrorists? Unless it's football or GAA etc, EVERYTHING is no more 'real' than wrestling.

ha, a new one I have in the back pocket :

    3) Oh, so you were one of those retard babies that believed wrestling was real and got butt-hurt when you found out it was fake? You know you can enjoy the show for the show, right?

The third one's a bit more aggressive but they're ranked in order or response (i.e. 1st then 2nd then 3rd). Hope that helps man. A wrestling fan always has to have this kind of stuff ready.....condescending ignorant bastards!

Whatever about how I feel about TNA, WWE etc today, I'll defend wrestling to the death.

    Shawn Michaels v Triple H (SummerSlam 2002)

i'd make them watch the buildup, back-story then the match.

    epic.

i can't see how anyone couldn't become emotionally involved...whether it's the match itself, whether it's the real life back-story (including being out for 5 years), whether it's the on-screen storyline, whether it's the commentary by JR & The King (which in my opinion was one of the greatest calls on a match ever), or a combination of all the above...

...i fail to see how someone could not enjoy that, an appreciate the artform.

can you tell me what happened, please?

Typed a long explanation up and then deleted it as Wiki explains it better:

At the 1998 Royal Rumble, Michaels received a legitimate back injury in a Casket match against The Undertaker.Michaels took a back body drop to the outside of the ring and smashed his lower back on the casket, causing him to herniate two discs and crush one completely. This forced Michaels into retirement after losing the WWF Championship to Steve Austin at WrestleMania XIV.

Michaels would continue to make non-wrestling appearances on WWF programming, and on November 23, 1998, replaced Sgt. Slaughter as the WWF Commissioner, a portrayed match maker and rules enforcer, eventually joining Vince McMahon's group of wrestlers called the Corporation as a villain. Throughout late 1998 and early 1999, Michaels made regular television appearances on Raw, in which he scheduled matches, throwing around his authority, and sometimes even deciding the outcome of matches. In early 1999, Michaels re-joined DX as a fan favorite, but disappeared from WWF television for a few months to have back surgery, and by the time he had returned, DX had broken up.

Michaels made occasional appearances as the WWF Commissioner during the spring and summer of 1999, but remained absent from television until May 15, 2000, upon which he returned on Raw to announce himself as the special guest referee for the Iron Man match between The Rock and Triple H at Judgment Day. One month later, Michaels briefly reappeared on Raw to hand over the role of Commissioner to Mick Foley and afterwards did not make any in-ring appearances until mid-2002, (he did, however, make a short speech at WWF New York during Armageddon 2000). During this time, believing that his wrestling career was over, Michaels was interested in training individuals who wanted to become professional wrestlers. He saw potential in using his name and opening the Shawn Michaels Wrestling Academy, after his lawyer, Skip McCormick, suggested the idea.Michaels eventually left the academy. During this time, Michaels was a sportscaster for San Antonio's local news for a short time during his retirement.

Just to add on to it Shawn Michaels was on and off TV during that time as he was messed up on drugs.

He wrestled once in his own Wrestling promotion in Texas.

He was meant to come back at Wrestlemania XVII which would be a springboard from him to come back to wrestle but he showed up to a Raw really messed up on drugs. Triple H in particular got really pissed off at him and they didnt talk for a year. Shawn between Wrestlemania XVII and Summerslam 2003 found God and cleaned himself back up. He mended bridges with Triple H after that and that opened the door for him to return.

To kind of answer the thread question. I normally turn the discussion over to MMA sharpish. :D

I dont really have one match I would have to look at the person male/female, if they were ever a fan and if so when. Same way I would go about recommending a movie or an album.

Personally I dont hear the whole "fake" and "gay" stuff much anymore. Maybe because I am older and as equal if not more likely the film "The Wrestler" which opened quite a few non-fans eyes about Wrestling that I've talked to about it.

Depending on what aspect of wrestling I'd like to show them, it would be these:

-Rob Van Dam v Jerry Lynn at either Living Dangerously or Hardcore Heaven. Here's a link to the Living Dangerously match, sums up why I loved ECW.
http://www.wrestlescoop.com/matches/ecw/rvd_lynn.shtml I loved these 2 in matches so much, the perfect pair. So sad that the WWF only let them have one Hardcore Title match on Sunday Night Heat.

-Wrestlemania 17. Basically the best PPV in wrestling history, what better to showcase wrestling

-The entrances of Shawn Michaels, the Undertaker, Steve Austin, HHH etc with a really hot crowd.

-Any of Shawn Michaels/Undertaker's matches at Wrestlemania or else the Badd Blood Hell in a Cell Match between them. Just American wrestling at it's best.

-The Vince McMahon/Steve Austin feud's greatest moments. The best heel character in wrestling against the best face, what is not to love?

I would probably break them in with a Royal Rumble PPV. My favourite Rumble was 2000, so maybe that one.

I've shown the Rumble to people who barely like wrestling (my dad, one of my cousins) and they seemed to enjoy the Rumble itself. You can just sit back for 90 minutes and see all these different weird and wonderful characters every 2 minutes, highly entertaining stuff.

If its for the Fake etc comments it has to be Taker vs Foley KOTR 98 HIAC everytime. They start making fun of the gimmicks and the cell for even being used etc but as the match starts on the Cell and since it is almost at the very start that the first bump happens that all changes quickly and when Foley makes his way back to the ring they are already gripped. Then later when he has a tooth sticking out of his nose and tum tacs in his back etc they really dont know what to say but they def wont say it's fake again.

Otherwise I guess as far as full PPV's go I guess id be boring and say WM 17

Apart from the Taker and Test match which was a mess, that is the one PPV if you make someone who knows nothing about wrestling watch, and they don't enjoy it, then they should give up on wrestling their and then, ****ing awesome PPV. :)

I remember showing a mate of mine Dean Malenko's and Chris Benoit's 30 minute Wrasslin match from Hog Wild 96. He was totally converted after it. The two of us used to drink beer and watch Nitro every Friday after that.:)

PPV Would have to be xSeven.
The greatest mania ever. Hands down.

If i didnt have 4 and something hours and had to do a quick search on youtube or something i would probably show them one of the mitb ladder matches, followed by a shawn michaels match, not sure which one.

Sorry for off-topic, but yes. My favourite is XIX and then X7. Both are fantastic.

I think he's implying Vince would have ye sleep with yer sisters for a storyline.

    Unless I'm reading it wrong....

I wouldn't bother showing someone a wrestling match to change their minds about it, it probably wouldn't work anyway.

The Dragon Gate 6 mens do seem to cause a few jaws to drop amongst people who have only ever seen WWE, however.

Hmmm...I wonder if showing them that Osirian Portal sketch [PLEASE DO NOT LINK A VIDEO OR I'LL CURL UP INTO THE FETAL POSITION AND CRY] or Zack Ryder's skits would do more for getting people into wrestling. Because it's the characters and storylines that keep us interested. Shawn's career is a goldmine for the best storylines in wrestling.

If it was to show how it's not "fake" then i'd show them Joey Mercury+Face+Ladder.

If it was to bring someone back in who hasn't watched for a few years then its gotta be the Shawn/Cena epic from the London RAW in 07.
