my brother who is a farmer was quite recently the victim of a robbery on his farm , thieves broke in during the night and stole two items of machinery , neither item was insured for theft and neither item were required to be taxed so they had no I.D of any kind , my brother bought them second hand so he doesnt even have anything on paper which connects him to them and he never bothered to take note of the serial no. on either piece of equipment , my question is this , in the unlikely event he were to come across theese two items , without any I.D , could he credibly complain to gardai and even the guards were to look in to it , would it be a case of the thiefs word against my brother

ps , the items were reported as stolen last month

If it's machinery it will have a serial number. Ask they guy who he bought it off if they have the serial number. Unfortunately, thieves will generally removes the obvious serial number but some machines may have more than one.

For example, years ago while dealing with a customer over one machine, I discovered that another machine that he had was a machine reported stolen in the UK. The thieves had removed the serial number of the power unit but forgot to take them off other items intrinsic to the machine.

That's unfortunate. Were there any dealer stickers on the items - might be able to track that way.

It does emphasis the importance of photographing, noting serials and putting your own mark on your machinery. You may think it's just a number but having worked in the machinery trade the serial number is central to everything - stock movements, warranty etc. Machines without serial numbers raise eyebrows immediately.

I would agree with Havana, it's pretty much yours against the thief or whoever acquired the items.
