Negative Inverting Program

I have a pretty basic negative scanner (came with a canon flat bed scanner) and the scans aren't great but they are good enough to see which are worthwhile for printing.

The only problem is the software is pretty poor and when I go to invert the negative, the image doesn't look at all right. Is there particular software that is good for this or is it just a matter of processing through gimp / photoshop etc?

If your scanner came with the ability to scan film.. it should do that for you when you do the scan.
You should be sure to set your scanner software to use "transmissive" mode, and tell it that you're scanning negative film.

if you scanner software doesn't have these options available, then it must not expect your scanner can do film scanning.

The 'invert' layer in photoshop is a grand job :)
