Ubuntu the pros and cons

When you buy a computer it will be loaded with all the correct drivers for the hardware in it.

Using Ubuntu or any other Linux distributions I would advise people to do a bit of research into the hardware they are using in particular the video card.

Video in Ubuntu that required Flash mostly Youtube was always a little choppy for me.

That said if you have all the correct hardware Ubuntu is an easy OS to use and you do not have to worry about Virus scans and so on.

The other thing that annoys me is that Ubuntu is free but if you want to run it you have to buy a computer with Windows already installed and pay for it.

It would be nice if you could buy a computer with Ubuntu pre installed and avoid paying for Windows.

Build a computer, much more bang for your buck :p

    I thought Dell allowed this?
    Or as said above build.
Or get a second hand or refurbished pc.
You might be able to get a repair shop to stick one together.
Its not really a con of Ubuntu.

Also, I don't find video in flash choppy at all.
Its probably some issue local to your system.

Your dead right about the hardware though.

There are reports on the net about people refusing to accept the Windows licence on first boot, and successfully claiming a refund for the Windows licence from the supplier ...... apparently it is stated on the licence.

If considering a purchase, ask the supplier what arrangements they have in place for a refund for the software, as you do not want it.
Eventually they might get the message ....

Either way don't buy 'just released/cutting edge' hardware, as it is likley that drivers for Linux have not yet been written.

Also do not forget that Ubuntu is not the only flavour of Linux ....... there are many fine distributions out there, all very user friendly.

For older hardware ubuntu will most likely have drivers already.

Unfortunatly while you can get linux preinstalled on some machines the price differential is so slight you might as well get windows installed, in case you ever need it for some reason like to increase the resale value of the machine. Windows refunds are more difficult to get as some vendors are linking it to the machine so you can't return the software separatly - but ask before you buy to get the message out.

PRO - you can move the HDD to another machine quite easily if there is a hardware problem , if you are lucky you may not even have to reconfigure X (in the old days all you did was delete xorg.conf and rebooted - but ununtu have been arsing about with the GUI in the last few version) ( a windows machine will probaly blue screen - not really a problem as this is a breach of the license and isn't supported )

The biggest CON is support for hardware and software, but in fairness Vista was a nightmare when first released, Windows 7 is mostly the same under the bonnet so not so many problems when it was released.

you can download videos and then play them if playback online is annyoing
