Has anyone seen this in Irish stores, heard good things coming from my friends in the UK... would really like to have a try of this hopefully to get away from the sugar overdose of Magners?

    Doh' I meant Stella Artois!!!

    Cheers

C&C are the distributor for A-B InBev's products in Ireland so I'd be very surprised if it appeared here.

Have you tried Aspall's or Double LL? I think Armagh cider is also starting to make appearances down here. Plus, there's a new cider-maker opening in Kinsale soon: Stonewell.

I spotted a bottle in my brother's fridge the other day, he's hoping it tastes like proper Belgium/French cider. I'll ask where he got it.

You have to love an optimist, eh?

Some comments (though no tasting notes) on Stella Cidre from Pete Brown here and here.

Does anywhere in Dublin you can get Stella Artois cider. I want to try it to see if its alright, i'm sick of bulmers and kopperberg. I like the rekorderlig apple but cant seem to be able to get it, can get most of the other flavours

Could you enlighten me about what you mean by that ? I don't think I've ever heard of Belgian cider, save from the odd craft cider made very locally in the Ardennes region, and French cider mainly comes from Brittany/Normandy.

On that topic, I've seen on Paul's blog the phrase "farmhouse cider". What exactly falls under this label ? Is it anywhere close to Breton/Norman ciders ? I'm dying to find this in Dublin. I usually fall for an Aspalls (which is ok) and I've tried LL (odd, but much closer to what I'm used to), but they don't quite match what's available in Brittany.

Any clues ? I remember tasting some very nice apples in the Temple Bar market, Llewelyn or some other Welsh-sounding name. Perhaps they make cider ?

I know I had a reason for posting that, that Armagh cider was being sold somewhere. But I can't now remember where it was. If it comes back to me I'll post it.

not much use for people down here but saw the armagh cider for sale in the john hewitt in belfast, it has some odd name which I thought was a description rather than the name.

    "Crisp" and "Mellow"?

According to their stockist list, Donnybrook Fair sells Crisp.

I think its really stupid of them to make it 4.5%. The only other cider I know that low is bulmers, perhaps their marketing men figured "well bulmers/magners is 4.5% and sells well so it must be what people want".

I reckon if they had made it 5% they would have had had loads of bulmers converts. It would cost less to make and sell 4.5% but I think they should have gone higher.

I'd actually prefer a lower alcohol cider. I'd especially like a "doux" cider like from Brittany or Normandy at around 2%.

Yup, and even the Brut is still lower than 5%.

I'd say you'd be in the minority there though, I am speaking of marketing men going after the general pub market. Just looking at past attempts of guinness to introduce low alcohol drinks in bars. I am shocked the mid strength guinness is in so many bars, I think they have brought several out equivalents in the past and they all failed.

Becks had to up the vier from 4% in the UK to 4.3% here, I know several Heineken drinkers who get pissed off with the 4.3% which is usually here while its 5% in most places. This is why I think if stella went to 5% they would get a lot, most ciders are 6% but I think pub drinkers might be put off by that high a strength, esp. with our "rounds culture".

If they did bring out 2% I expect they would try and charge the same. I remember in one thread pint bottles of bulmers were going for €8.60!

Just to let you all know,Tesco are now selling Stella Cidre.A 568ml bottle is currently on special for €2. Tried some last night and I found it to be nicer than Bulmers with less of an after taste and not as gassy.

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 2,916 ✭✭✭RonMexico

Enjoying a 568ml bottle now. Lovely taste, I'm not much of a cider drinker these days after horrible Bulmer's binges put me off it for years.

Those specials run at these dates
    SAVE 3.99 Was 18.99 Now 15.00 valid from 20/7/2011 until 16/8/2011

so usually it will be 2.37 per bottle

On tesco online the price is actually showing as €11.35 for 8. Could be a misprice which they usually will honour.

At last this is available over here.

Had some in England back in May and loved it. Its much nicer than Bulmers and Krapaberg. I always found that i'd be suffering from heartburn for a few days after drinking Bulmers but didn't have any when i drank Cidre. Its far less gassy than Bulmers and i think its sweeter as well.

I got the case for €11.35 at the weekend in Tesco.

What's it like? Sweet or dry?

Tasted some at a bbq at wknd, awful artificial taste and horribly sweet, I'd say its aimed at teenage girls (over 18 of course ).

That's a pitty. Looking for dry ciders. Ended up bringing some back from Liverpool at the weekend.

Fun story : I've been told by the owner of a crêperie that Breton cider could be found in a wine shop in Blackrock. So off to Blackrock I went, asking every publican and shop owner about French cider.

Most of them just shook their heads in bewilderment, a few knew that there was cider made in France, but one give it a minute's thought, and asked me if I was after the Stella Artois Cidre.

    I died a little inside.

I bought a box of it on Friday, have to say it tasted lovely - although I am a regular Bulmers drinker. i found a bit sweeter than Bulmers.

It hit me like a ton of bricks though - not sure did this happen to others too.

This seems to be an attempt to copy Magners. It's the same colour and the same sweet.

Wonder if they meant http://www.hollandsofbray.com/ instead of blackrock. They usually have different stuff in every so often.

Been tempted to try this stuff but just haven't had the opportunity to buy some of it and haven't had much of a taste for cider recently.

Did you try oddbins? they have a good selection of beers.

I bought a box of the stella cider yesterday. Its ok, better than bulmers but still not great. If anyone knows a place to get good quality french/belgian cider in Galway could they please tell me?

Can't think of the name off hand but there is that world food shop on one of the pedestrian streets. Lots of good beer down the back.

    Also try Cases.

    [edit]

Oh the first one is McCambridges

Oddbins is now closed. A few publicans told me that it would have been the best place to get that kind of stuff, but well.

@Mantel : I doubt Holland's was what they had in mind, but I'll go and check anyway - haven't been there yet, and it sounds like the kind of place I want to spend my paycheck in.

It's not an urgent carving either, it just goes very well with crêpes - or indeed galettes, which are not savoury crêpes but crêpe-like things made of buckwheat. And that's yuuummmmmy. With eggs, ham and grated Emmental. Mmmm.

Indeed! They're stocking some of the recent craft beers that have started to appear around the country. They also have a twitter account so you can check with them for french cider before paying a visit, they recently had a small fire in the shop but I believe most of it has been fixed/repaired now.
