Good Friday Traditions

So Im just back from Tesco. Went there to get a few nice pieces of Donegal Catch for the dinner since Im staying off meat today. However when I got there all the cod was gone. No Donegal Catch, no Tesco brand. All sold out. Managed to get one of the few packets of whiting that was left. Sure feck it, it'll do. But couldnt believe that nearly every bit of fish was sold out in Tesco. Has anyone noticed this in the shops they've been in today?

If you were to believe the majority of the posters on Boards today then no one in Ireland was staying off the meat. Everyone was going to eat steaks and drink beer. But it actually doesnt seem to be the case. It looks like quite a lot of people went for fish instead of meat today. It seems Good Friday still holds a lot of value and meaning to a large amount of the people of Ireland.

I had fish for dinner today. Some haddock.

I had it sandwiched between a steak and a lamb chop.

Tesco always sells out of cod. I dont know why. I love the donegal catch thats why i notice.

You should go to lidl or dunnes. They seem to be ok for it.

Either that or fish fingers in tesco

Perhaps cause cod is becoming extint but dont let that stop you from eating it!!

I'm not Christian but I won't be eating meat today because my parents would prefer if I didn't. My parents aren't Christian either (although my mother might be a little bit) but they were brought up not to eat meat on Good Friday, and see it more of their heritage rather than a Christian act.

It doesn't bother me either way (although I forgot and was getting ham out of the fridge when my father reminded me so I had noodles instead.)

I have never once seen Tesco sold out of fish before and I do buy a decent amount of it too. But even the Tesco brand stuff which is apparently pure muck was sold out.

My tradition is ignoring all and any religious connotations with today.

I am interested to know If you will carry on this tradition when you leave home.

fair play to you for respecting your parents !

I have done the ham thing myself.

It wont. whats your problem flower! Guess what! we are heading for a world food shortage in the next few years so cod is the least of my worries with the population explosions. But lets all climb up on our horse...

Maybe its just my one in drogheda. Sorry. its just something i did notice. I love donegal catch especially the one with the crackled pepper or garlic sauce.

I don't understand the fascination people have with cod. It's probably the blandest fish in the sea.

I don't know. It's not hugely important to me at the moment. Maybe when I'm away from family it'll be something as a reminder of them. Maybe when I have kids it'll be something I want to pass down as something "we" have done. I've thought about it and sometimes I think I will, and others times I want a ham sammich. I guess I'll figure out some time I'm on my own for Good Friday or Ash Wednesday.

I like the donegal catch garlic sauce cod. If I'm eating out I would have salmon or Trout.

Yes, largely to people over the age of 40 - which is nearly half the population as per the 2006 census

The younger demographics don't give a **** for the most part.

Surely eating out goes against the moral obligations of Good Friday :D

I'd have fish two or three days a week anyway so had a piece of salmon today. We really should change the law about selling alcohol on Good Friday though. Complete bollocks that I have to go back to Tesco tomorrow to get some wine /beer for the weekend when I could have bought it when I was there today. And even more bollocks that on a holiday weekend, with the economy on it's fúcking knees, pubs/restaurants/ hotels can't sell alcohol.

Havent lived at home in about 15 years but never eat meat on Ash Wednesday or Good Friday.

The GF made a fantastic veggie / pasta bake earlier.

It my decision, although I will have a few beers,

Not a holy joe and do most things the church says I shouldnt but I hate all this anti Catholic Sh**, especially when approx 85% of us claim to be Catholic (not exactly sure of the actual figures so dont kill me)
Also, people complain about no pubs etc today, but they sure wont complain about the bank holiday Monday or all the other days off a year we get..

Does the body of Christ count as meat?

I get pissed off about this fish not being meat is rubbish. The church made up this rule to boost the fishing industry. Weren't Paul and some of the others fishermen? Cartel anyone?

Had a nice bit of chicken for me dinner but strangely enough I bought a couple of nice haddock fillets for when I come home locked tomorrow night :D

Had chicken today, *sups beer*....which Tesco was that OP? I've always frequented Tesco, Finglas in Dublin and it must be the best and largest Tesco in Ireland. They always have their shelves stocked and never once noticed a shortage of fish, not even today.

I think hotels can sell you alcohol once your a ressie, not that that makes any difference to the economy..

Every year for the past 4 years I go into Tesco for an easter egg on Good Friday, and every year they are sold out...my traditions suck! :(

I've heard from older relatives through the years that they ate fish every Friday all year round for religious reasons, that seems to have been lost in translation. Are Good Friday & Ash Wednesday not more about days of fasting and abstinence where all of your meals are light and that there is only really one main meal taken, (not containing meat) the rest were to be like dry toast & black tea like they have on pilgrimages? Interesting....http://www.catholic.org/clife/lent/abfast.php
