Thermostat stuck closed? Is the fan working? Don't let it overheat whatever you do, it'll only cause even more trouble...

Have you tried turning the heater up full, and the fan to max when you get to the lights. If this helps you should look at the rad/cooling system.

How come you have a 1988 Megane? They didn't start making them until 1995.

It doesn't sound good. If its cutting out due to the overheating, that can be a sign that its getting so hot that the clearances are reduced and the pistons are seizing to the bores. Hence why when it cools down again it will start, as the clearances return to normal...not without damage though.

Thats if its a 98 megane.

On a 2008 one the ecu will shut down the engine to prevent overheating damage.

I'd say mistakenly typing 1988 instead of 98 is a good bet. If he meant 2008 then the cars not his only issue :)

yes sorry it was 1998 i meant. it drives perfect in top gear for miles but if u leave it tick over she cuts out after a trip. so traffic lights a problem. fan works all that side ok. its been going on since august 2010. i could live whit it fine around the country area but i need to goo 210 miles to dublin soon and tbh i could see it going all the way fine but after one or two traffic lights the fun will start. shes such a clean nice car well cared for it would be a shame to scrap it

its not over heating as such the gauge gives the usual reading its just when u stand still after a journey and leave here tick over

Is there a temperature sensor on the radiator that controls an electric fan ? (not familiar with megane ...) ?

Leave the cabin heater blowing hot and check coolant level.

Also check the gaps in the radiator where the air is supposed to flow through.
