Internet Connection Problem

Hi, I am currently connected to Eircom Broadband using their supplied Motorola modem/router. In an attempt to get better wireless coverage I bought a Netgear N300 Wireless Dualband ASDL2 + Modem router. I cannot get a connection with it either using the supplied software or manually. I have disabled my security firewall and the Windows firewall. I have removed the filter and tried a direct connection to the phone socket and also tried resetting the router using the netgear instructions - no joy. Eircom are no help - any ideas appreciated.
    Cheers

    A few things to try:

When connected via CAT5 to the router are you able to access the internet?

If not have you changed the connection settings to those provided by Eircom?
If your upgrading or changing your Eircom Broadband modem / Router you will need these settings…

    Encapsulation: RFC 2516 PPPoE
    Multiplexing: LLC
    Qos: UBR
    Pcr Rate: 0
    Scr Rate: 0
    Autodetect: Disable
    VPI: 8
    VCI: 35
    Enable: Yes

If you can connect via wired but not wireless have you checked to make sure that either your hardware supports wireless N or, if it doesn't, that the router is broadcasting wireless G?

Try changing your DNS to a different provider such as google: 8.8.8.8 and 8.8.4.4

Hi and thanks a million for the reply, I appreciate it. I am really dumb about this stuff - I do not know what CAT% connection is or how I would check. I cannot get a wired connection and I am using the settings you suggest. Do not know about DNS or how I might try changing it eithre - I really need the "Ladybird" instructions if anyone has the time or the will!!.
    Best Regards.

From the above can I assume that you are currently able to access the router settings page (192.168.1.xxx)? If you can what information is it showing you on the main/home screen, a screenshot would be preferable (alt+prtnscn).

Since you're moving from an old router which was working we can safely assume that the hardware in place is all correctly working but for the time being a direcy wall connection without using the filters would be preferable since it rules out everything. I know you've said you tried it before so this is only to keep the variables to a minimum. While testing without the filter ensure any other phones on the same line are disconnected.

It should get an internet connection even if you don't have a DNS set, it just means you won't get domain resolution so let's not worry about that for the moment.

Hi Again, I got that sorted out. I really appreciate you taking the time to try to help me, although it is unlikely, I hope that I can be of assistance to you sometime - do not be afraid to ask.
    Best regards.

Out of curiosity what was the resolution to the problem?

I too bought said router above in a hope of improving speed and range. While I can connect to the internet, the speed is very poor. I am on eircom's 8mb NGB and on either their own speed test page or speedtest.net i am only getting download of 2.0 and upload of 0.03.

I called eircom support, they say they can see speed to my modem is 5mb.

I have changed settings as above and also manually put in primary and secondary dns settings but no joy.

Any help you can give would be gratefully received.

    Got my problem fixed. It might help anyone else having problems. Here is what i did;

Log onto the Netgear Router Manager, go down Advanced Settings and select QoS Set-Up, Unclick 'Enable WMM' and Unclick '...Internet Qos On'. Then click on 'Apply' and that's it.

I'm now getting Download Speeds of just less than 5MBs. Happy Days!!!
