Teaching the dog to swim

    Lads advice please.

I am training a Vizsla at the moment and all is goin well so far.No problem with the whistle etc and he will retrieve to hand every time.
Small problem with his swimming though.
He loves the water and will go in without hesitation after the dummy but when he gets out of his depth he starts the classic doggy paddle ( he is swimming with his head up and consequently his ass sinks) and after about10-15 seconds he starts to get anxious and comes out of the water, then he'll go straight back in again so he doesn't seem to be afraid.
I think that the problem is that he might not be using his back legs at all so he is making it hard for himself.
    Any suggestions ?

    Thanks,Viz

He will learn himself or take him with another dog a few times, as soon as he has gained confidence he will be away no problem.

Make sure the water is very calm as choppy water or waves will just panic him.

Try and take him to water that is just the right depth so he can touch the bottom so he has to use all 4 legs to move then he will get the jist of what to do in deeper water.

Thought my mates dog how to swim yesterday brought it down to a calm lake with another dog played fetch out into the lake with the other dog then tossed the other dog in and helped him back up in under 10 mins he was off swimmin everywhere not a bother in him , just make sure its in a calm enviroment and a give little push :)

Run em with another dog, most likly get competitive and will learn quick then, i would be careful about tossing dog in, i made this mistake - took few weeks to rectify, start of in shallow water then progress up.
