Where do you buy yours? What kinds of things do you buy? How much do you spend?

I keep hearing the women folk agonising about buying a €30 top, €50 shoes or a €40 this or that. In my experience, everything I buy is at least €100 and it doesn't last p*****g time because it's over-priced rubbish.

How does one ensure value is got in the hunt for decent clothing? Apologies if this is a repeat question.

my tshirts generally cost about five euro cos I buy them on sale in heatons, jeans I'll buy cheap in pennys and if I see a nice cheap jumper or jacket in town I'll pick it up.

most I've ever spent on an item of clothing is an 80 euro jacket recently and I still felt like a fool for spending that much money.

im the same i could spend 300 euro easily and go home with 3 things usually firetrap jeans that cost around 90 euro and a jacket around the same price.mens clothes arent cheap here.depends were you willing to shop, you can get t-shirts in penneys for 5 euro that you can wear on a night out.heatons is pretty cheap for sports clothing aswell.

I like places like Unique. You will usually get decent jeans there for around 20 bucks.Same for t-shirts,casual short sleeve shirts etc.

I like tk-maxx too.Granted you need patients to spend time digging but there are always bargains to be had, particularly for smart/casual shoes.

Tesco have good clothes at decent prices.

Mens cloths in tesco... God no,

This is what you need in your wardrobe:-

    A Good Suit (2 better)

    3 Good shirts

    3 Good Ties.

a pair of Black shoes and Socks.

3 Pairs of Jeans, (not tesco) buy good ones around 80 euros each. +

A good selection of Casual Shirts, T-Shirts, Polo shirts

depending your your work you will need to have more trousers..

The average man in Ireland should really only spend 500 euros a year. And buy a new suit every 3/4 years. But if you wear a suit to work you may need to buy them every year.

    shopstyle.co.uk

I like it because you can find what you want from the net. It scans all the clothes available in all High Street Shops. You can also select size, price range and style of jeans/t-shirt, colour your going for.

As a woman, I love shopping, but I hate going shopping in reality. Shopping online is fantastic. And considering i have more curves/bumps then men, ive never had a problem with getting the right size. Usually they allow you to return the goods to the shop or free returns postage.

I must add, its just a portal to get to the shops. If you like a particular type of jeans, you click on the photo and it brings you to the House of Fraser, or M&S website etc.

This way I find I get more value for money with something im really happy with and only took me 10 minutes to find. Most UK stores deliever to Ireland for free if you spend over certain amount, or are only 5 quid or so for postage. (Or if you have time you can go direct to the shop)

Have you ever actually looked or are you basing it on the "They are from Tesco, therefore must be crap" approach. Obviously everybody should mix and match where they get their clothes. I wasn't referring to just "good" clothes either.

I'm not saying buy everything there. The OP asked about price and Tesco do have decent, casual clothes for decent prices. They do particularly decent knitwear and coats. I've a black coat I wear pretty often and people regularly comment on it. If you want to boost a wardrobe with decent clothes at a decent price, Tesco are more than OK.

Unless you literally mean "cloths" :D

I would usually buy t-shirts from Pennys and Dunnes, Jeans from Quills in Cork or Kerry as they have Kingpin & Blend brands which are cheap but still good quality

I would sometimes purchase nice going out clothes from Next or Topman once the price is within reason...that said, to echo previous posters - some of Dunnes and Pennys clothes are fine for nights out and look no different to the overpriced versions you'll find in River Island.

To backup Parker Kent - nothing wrong with Tesco atall - I have a very nice jacket which I got for €35 there, I find their t-shirts are good quality also.

€80 for jeans? Most I ever spent was €60 and I resolved never to spend that much on a pair again.

Neu Look had an offer recently; 2 pairs (good pairs) of jeans for €25.

I sounded like a Tesco fanboy...or an undercover agent for Tesco :pac:

But yeah, they have nice jumpers!

Usually I buy online as it's impossible to get stuff that fits in the shops. I have next to no clothes! I get by on the bare minimum.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 1,639 ✭✭✭Sugar Free

A lot of my workwear would be from M&S.
TK Maxx for the odd designer item at reasonable prices.
Kildare Village for the same reason, though I haven't been overly impressed with it.

I use asos for a bit of casual stuff but I don't really wear t-shirts or runners/trainers much anymore.

Have started ordering bespoke shirts online too. Cheaper than most well known menswear shirts and the quality is as good as all but the high-end shirtmakers (Thomas Pink, Jermyns etc.)

I probably spend between 150-200E a month on stuff but 1) I've no debts and very reasonable rent and 2) I'm probably more into it than the average Irish guy.

    Burton for casual clothes!

    Topman for shirts/pants for work!

River Island have nice suits as well.

I had a taste for Tommy Hilfigger shirts, jumpers and jeans, and for Bugatti or Remus coats. Then I lost 4 stone and absolutely none of them fit me anymore. So I'm rediscovering t-shirts and cheap jeans in Dunnes for now.

Speaking of which, having gone from a 36" waist to a 30" was quite a shock. I'd never worn a 30" before, and, now that I've got a pair, it's too bloody big!!

Is it possible to get 29" or 28" waists in many Irish clothes shops? I've never had to look before, so I haven't a clue!

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 6,116 ✭✭✭starviewadams

    I have:

    1 pair of shorts
    2/3 t-shirts
    2 pairs of jeans
    2 shirts

I have a pathological hatred of shopping and will only buy clothes if I need to replace one of the above, and I buy all my clothes online!

28" nearly impossible to come by, 29" is where it starts usually.

M&S seem to have every assortment of trousers in various lengths and waists.

Anyway, topman, H&M, Berska, NEXT, and a few others.

ManMdirect for online clothes including any sportswear I need. So much cheaper.

Topman used to have 28 inch waists. I needed one for a bit a few years ago, so was handy to get a cheapish jeans and trousers there till I was back to my usual 30 inch.

I have to say, I'd never buy jeans in this country again if I can avoid it... U.S.A. FTW. If you're ever on holidays in the USA, it is absolutely unreal the prices of Levi, Wrangler, Lee, Emporio Armani, etc. jeans. Absolutely unreal.

Even as a general rule, I've found that the USA is just unbelievably competetive for prices on pretty much everything. I was in the US a couple of years back around New Years, and I got an Armani blazer, two pairs of slacks, two shirts and a belt all for $370... because of their January sales that started in December! And before anyone suggests that they were knock-off, this was from an Armani store, so it was all legit.

Also, you've got Levi Outlet, adidas outlet, Tommy Hilfiger Outlet, <insert brand name here> Outlet everywhere in the USA, and the prices for some of the clothes is unreal. The only thing that stopped me buying a rakeload more stuff when I was over there in March was I was worried my suitcases wouldn't close!!!!!!

Enough of my loving of the USA, and on to t-shirts and stuff. In my opinion, you cannot look past Marks and Spencer for t-shirts (their Blue Harbour ones are just superb), underwear, socks, etc. The prices may be a little more than most, but the quality just speaks for itself. I've never gone into an M&S looking for something and been disappointed. Their polo shirts are also superb and look and feel good. Their smart/casual slacks are also excellent.

Also, if you can order them online (I'm not sure, I get them from a supplier direct), check out Gildan branded hooded tops. They are superb, comfortable, warm and quite competetive.

Gap does 28" jeans and trousers but they might be hard to come by in the shops. You can order online though.

I go to Pennys for T-shirt, jocks, socks, summer shoes, occassionally i get a shirt there but never jeans
Zara for jeans, T-shirt, jumpers, pretty much everything.
Fatface were good, but they seem to be stuck in winter season, got some nice summer trainers there recently.
Massimo Dutti for shirts and jeans, go when the sale is on, or when abroad.

I've always found Dunnes mens section kinda odd, Pennys is way better.
    korkys for nice shoes, boots

H&M used to be quite good but losing faith in them. The stock never really changes as far as i can see.

I don't go to Unique because the music and townys put me off.

M&S isn't great except for shirts, unless your my da.

The last clothes I bought range from cheap to moderately pricey:
€170 suit, 3 plain white Topman shirts €63 altogether (I'm skinny and they do slimfit ones), light jumper from River Island €35, a few Dunnes plain black/white t-shirts and some socks totalling €25, brown shoes from Schuh for €50/60.

This is over the course of the last few months of course, I'm not a clothes freak.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 1,952 ✭✭✭magneticimpulse

Yeah at least for ladies, Tesco's has some nice jackets. I know this as everytime I comment on my friends clothes they tell me its from Tesco's.

Im never keen on men wearing Topman, River Island, Next stuff. I think it looks cheap and might as well be from Pennys for the price you pay. I would far rather shop in Tesco's then buy anything in River Island myself and im quite fussy about what I wear. (thou i shop in House of Fraser online and theres always sale's online).

I think the boutiques in Debenhams, House of Fraser or Arnotts have better quality. (ok not the river island boutique but the other ones).

Are you sure? I got a 30" pair of Tommy jeans for my boyfriend.

You can always shop online. Most shops have a larger selection with their online websites.

I've definitely seen a few pairs of 28'' in Topman and New Look before. Now there wouldn't be as many pairs or as much choice as there would be for 30'' or 32'' but they do exist here.

Well done on the weight loss btw*. I've only recently began fitting into 36'' again, having crept towards 38'' for the past couple of months. :( I have one pair of 32'' shorts that just about fit me last summer, but I somehow doubt they'll fit me anytime this summer....

*assuming it wasn't due to illness or something, if it was then I apologise for bringing it up. :o

Not at all, it was I who brought it up ;) Just bitten by the fitness bug is all. Went to J&J today. They had several 28" jeans but they all looked a little juvenile. Got a great pair of 28-30s in River Island in the end. Tommy Hilfigger don't seem to do much 28s.
