The 1.6 Zetec focus is a great choice, nice handling, good on juice and its a decent looking car too.

Hmmmmmmm, not sure about them good on juice. My choice is the 2005 onwards 108bhp 1.6 tdci - decent torque, very easy on fuel, long range timing belt interval, good all rounder and will have great resale value in time to come, more so than the petrol version.

and the other joys of modern diesels engines.

I`d stick to the proven 1.6 zetec engine!

yeah, but shure if we all worried like that, you would'nt get out of bed in the morn. I've had a few of these, never had an issue.

What do ye think of the 6000e asking price for the focus in the link? From looking around it seems like the general price for an 05!

Its a good looking car, but they are getting cheaper nowadays, and there's lots of offer.
This one is cheaper and with a good haggle, you might get it closer to 5k, higher spec, taxed and 2 years fresh test/nct.

I drive a 2005 1.6 petrol Zetec. Fantastic handling, extremely reliable and economical. Bought it from new and have never even had the slightest thing go wrong with it so I couldn't even tell you what problems to look out for in a 2nd hand. Zetec has the sports suspension and seats, alloys, AC and heated windscreen. Take your time and pick a well cared for one. It should purr, handle nicely and gears should be smooth.

Go for the 1.8 TDCI, less to go wrong, not much more in tax, frugal and have been putting 100's of k on them since '04 (had the bog '99 turbo diesel, very slow, 04 TDDI and 06 TDCI, a big improvement) and nothing has gone wrong.
The only thing to watch out for are the pipes from the turbo to the injector, they can blow, but a chimp could replace them.
And most importantly no DPF, they only make sense in a post '08 car where you'll get some tax benefits, but that seems out of the OP's budget.

Go for a Ghia or Titanium as they have the better 1.6 petrol engine. It's more powerful, refined and economical.

would a 2005 focus zetech qualify under the scrappage scheme or is it strictly limited to cars over ten year old

so your limited to renault

maybe trading a six year old car under a scrappage scheme might not be such a good idea , wouldnt they simply value the car at the same price as a ten year old or an old banger

Why would you scrap a 05 car?

as it happens , the car is giving trouble and no mechanic has been able to get to the bottom of it , imagine your cruising down a motorway doing around 70, all of a sudden , a message comes on screen , engine default and before you know it , you are freewheeling as thier is no response from the accellerator , however , once you pull in and turn of the ignition , everything seems to reset and your on your way again , that was ok when it only happened at motorway speeds as i wouldnt be on a motorway that often but its started happening while doing 35 mile an hour of late

I'll give you 1,300 for it. That is €50 more than the scrappage just there!
