My shave didn't go too well this morning. Now I've got redness around right part of moustache area, under chin and bottom of neckline.

Any suggestions in getting the redness down?

I tried alum block and moisturiser. Still have red.

You are shaving too hard. What razor/blade are you using?

Strange how different blades suit different people. I can use a Feather with no problem but some "milder" blades leave me in bits.

Thing is I had a perfect shave two days before with same blade and cream.

I must have been rushing or pressing down too hard. I've read the feather ones give a nice close shave.

They do, but they need to be handled with care.

What are the Feather blades people have mentioned here?
I have terrible redness and pain when I shave my neck each time, I must be shaving too hard as someone said already.

But to save on starting a new topic on here:

What blades, shaving creams and moisturisers do you guys recommend that will help keep redness down and give my neck that smooth movie star look?

    Thanks

Proraso is a great cream to try, use it with the pre-shave cream for nicer results.

Feathers are here http://www.shaving.ie/products/Feather-Hi-Stainless-Platinum-Razor-Blades.html. You do, literally, need a feather-light touch when using them, but I find them outstanding.

I use Proraso pre-shave cream, Mitchell's Wool Fat shaving soap and, afterwards, Trumper's Coral Skin Food.

    Thanks guys.
Also while I have you's, I use gillette mach 3, should I not use these? They bad blades?

EDIT: Just had a look at the feather light blades, I'd be a bit nervous using them tbh. Anything like Gillette razors out there?

Sorry for the n00b questions guys!

Didn't realise you were not already using a double-edged blade (DE as we enthusiasts call them). I was using Gillette Fusion razors until about 3 years ago, when I ventured into the wonderful world of DE shaving. I would never, ever, go back. My skin is better and my shaves are smoother.

If you want to try it without spending too much, there is an inexpensive one here. If you do try, give it a few days, don't try for an extremely close shave at first, and just let the razor glide over your face — never put any pressure on it.

Thanks Michael G for all the information!! Just that a few people think i have been attacked by an animal or something when I shave my neck over the past few weeks lol.

So if I go for these products as you have mentioned up above to start with i should notice a difference in a week or two?

    Feather-Popular-Razor
    Geo-F-Trumper-Coral-Skin-Food
    Mitchells-Wool-Fat-Shaving-Soap-Refill
    Proraso-Pre-Post-Shave-Barber-Sized-500ml-Pot

Also will look into getting a brush too.

Is there a shop in Dublin i can get these products instead of getting them off this website?

shaving.ie is a great site, good value (usually a lot cheaper than shops) and usually you have the stuff next working day. Starting off with DE can be expensive but will save you a small fortune in the end. I've bought 100 Gillette 7 O'Clock Green blades (about €20) that's 2 years worth of shaving. Much better than €16 for 8 weeks.

On your redness on your neck, make sure you're shaving with the direction of growth, you'd be surprised how many people out there are shaving against the grain. I was initially taught to shave by my dad, who told me shave down on the face and up on the neck. This worked for him, but I suffered years of razor burn. Now I've learnt to shave with the growth and haven't had a problem since I started with DE. check out mantic59's videos on youtube. He has some great tutorials there.

    Thanks man!
I'll have a look through his vids this evening.
Yeah the growth on my neck is like a lot of other fellas, grows sideways and down I think. Maybe I will get a shaving brush and some good shaving cream first to help lift the hairs more and see if that makes a difference as I have like 15 gillette blades I got two weeks ago to use up lol.

Also, sorry to Gummy Panda for hijacking your topic!!!!

Yes, you should soon see a difference. I suggest you look at this clip on YouTube. The man in it is something of a shaving fanactic who has posted lots of videos and most of them are very instructive.

I don't know if there is somewhere in Dublin where you could get all of the various items; I doubt it. I know Knights in the St Stephen's Green centre sell some stuff, and the few traditional barbershops like the Waldorf in Westmoreland Street may do so as well. I get all my shaving stuff from the Shaving.ie website because the prices are good and you will generally get the stuff in the post the day after you order it (by the way I have no connection, business or otherwise, with the site).

Just one more thought: for those first few tentative shaves it might be as well not to use the Feather blades that come with the razor. I find Wilkinson Sword blades quite mild, which will reduce the risk of you nicking yourself. You can get them in Boots and many other places. And one other essential item, in case you don't have one already, is a styptic pencil. The occasional nick is more or less unavoidable but a dab of a dampened styptic pencil will stop any bleeding straight away.

So are you saying that I could get a Wilkinson Sword blade instead of the Feather one and will get the same result or do you mean the Wilkinson blades are just better to start off with then after a week or two move onto the Feather blades?

Also thanks for the tip on the styptic pencil, had no idea about that!

The feather blades are known to be very sharp. Seasoned DE shavers would suggest that you need to get your technique right before you start thinking about feathers. (unlike multiblade razors, you don't drag a DE across your face, you leave the weight of the razor do the work and guide the razor with your hand)

You'll need to check out a few blades before you find one that's right for you. There's a very large selection available on shaving.ie and there are sample packs too so you can see which works out best for you.

That's what I meant, but perhaps Foinse is right to be more cautious. You might be lucky and have no problem with the Feathers from the start, but mishaps at an early stage in DE shaving can be very discouraging so maybe it's better to be safe than sorry.

Foinse makes another important point: types of DE blades are not all the same. I can use Feathers with no problem but there are less sharp brands that don't suit me at all, and if I use them I am likely to end up with nicks and razor burn. Everyone is different; it has to do with things like the thickness and grain of your beard, your skin type and your technique.

Finding out what works is great fun, though :).

Ok I will listen to both you and Foinse as you's know what your talking about and I will order a sample pack first with some of that shaving cream/soap to see which is best for me.
    Thanks a lot guys!!!!

    Are you in work tomorrow?
I've a few different brands at home which I haven't used, if I remeber I'll drop them down to you to try and see which suits you best.

One a general note, Michael G, mentioned the Wilkinson Sword blades, which in my experience I've found to be pretty decent only thing is the razor they sell is crap, it's plastic and very light compared to a decent Mekeur.

Good luck...plenty of support and advice in this forum!! Let us know how you get on...remember - no pressure is important, just let the razor's weight do the work. I learnt that the painful way!!

it's okay. I think it was just a bad blade, not enough moisture in the lather and me rushing.

I had a perfect shave there with a new persona blade. No drag at all. It felt like the lather had dissolved the hair and I was just using the razor to wipe the lather away.

I've tried a few of them but didn't like them. My face felt no different, I couldn't get as smooth a shave as I get with soap, and they leave a scummy slick on the blade which is difficult to get off.

Good stuff. But I have been watching the Mantic video embedded in the blog — I hadn't looked at it for some time. One thing I notice is that he doesn't use his other hand to help stretch his skin. I find it essential to do that (especially on my neck) to avoid nicks or razor burn. The skin shouldn't be pulled taut; the idea is to avoid any areas of slack skin that might be pushed ahead of the blade forming folds that will be nicked.

For a beginner, I certainly would not advise a third pass against the grain or the "tidying up" he does afterwards.

Finally, I prefer the last rinse to be with cold water. It helps to close the pores and, even in Winter, is refreshing.
