Window display or no window display

    Hi there,
Someone I know is getting their retail shop (a Hallmark cards and gifts shop) refitted and they are wondering whether or not to continue using the window space to display a lot of stock, or to change it so that the windows are unobstructed.

The obvious argument for the window display option is that it means people passing by will notice an item they're interested in sitting in the window, and come in to the shop to buy it.

On the other hand, the window display gets in the way of being able to see in to the rest of the shop and having this clear and open view can make the entire shop more visible and more inviting.

In getting a refit done, with new lights, new layout etc you want people to notice and to come in for that reason alone, so having loads of stuff piled up in the window could mean people passing by without noticing.

Would be interested to hear peoples thoughts.

Thats a tricky one alright. Id say if the window was deffo going to be clear, as in people can genuinely see in without glare or light levels being a problem, you could try the no stock in window approach. Even until customers get used to the new fitout. Most Hallmark/gift shops are window dressed the same so you may stand out if the shop looks a bit different. I like the light airy feel you get from being able to look straight into a shop. I think you can draw people in just as well, as long as they actually can see in. All day, and under all light levels.
