Brand new iphone 4 wont start

So I arrived home last night and herself had just changed contract on three and arrived home with a brand new iPhone 4. It wouldn't start up - just shows the apple logo whilest sharging.

So I thought - download iTunes and see it if it recognizes the phone and does something - yes it does - shows the phone in recovery mode and asks to restore. Ok says I and proceeds until I hit error 1611.

So a lot of googling and retrying the procedure and I'm thinking - is this a phone that someone has fecked up and returned to Three? Surely a brand new iPhone shouldn;t be giving this problem - unless this is a well known issue?

That's a bit odd. Was it still in the full plastic packaging? If so you're best off just bringing it back to Three and get a new one. :)

I suspect that it is a phone that someone else had and returned for whatever reason. I wonder what happens to phones that are returned within the 14 day initial period ....

Hard reset? Power and Home button, hold both until the phone reboots.

Very odd for a new phone though.

I'd doubt this is the case. Those phones are sent back to apple for refurbishment as far as I know and used for replacements or sold on their refurb site.

You're best bet is bring it back to where you bought the phone. Error 1611 is generally a hardware issue. You could also try another computer or another cable just to riule out any issue with them.

Had the identical problem and error at Christmas with a fresh out-of-the-box 32GB. After a good deal of looking up forums and attempting fixes, I just brought it back to three and they replaced it there and then. The manager actually said that DOA is the only issue that doesn't require the phone to be sent back to Apple.
