    Hi

I'm not yet registered for vat and I'm just setting a ltd company up but i have a question about vat.

I've suppliers in the uk and they have told me that they will not charge vat once i give them an irish vat number - i sort it out here.

my question is what is the situation if i sell some of these goods back into the uk retail market - is it ok to charge irish vat or do i need to register in the uk?

    thanks

If you are IE VAT registered foreign EU firms will supply you with goods minus the VAT as Intra-Community supplies. You then charge IE VAT when you sell them on, including exports abroad within the EU to retail customers. However if you sell on to foreign firms/persons with a VAT number (not private customers without one) then you will zero rate vat just like others did for you. Have a look at the thresholds and decide if your turnover warrants vat registration here. You only have to register for vat abroad when you reach a certain turnover threshold as well. Each country in the EU have different thresholds.

I would be of the opinion that you should only register for vat if you really have to.
