    Hi all,

Sorry if this is against forum rules on copying DVDs or whatever, but you might be able to help me out.

I copied my wedding DVD on my old windows laptop to have a back up in case the original was scratched or whatever.

I used DVD Shrink to make an image file, and then imgburn to burn the disc. It was a very easy process, and the software was free.

Ive given the copy to a relative now and want to copy a backup for myself again.

Can anyone give me the complete newbie gob****es guide to doing this on the mac as easy as it was with the windows laptop?

    Many thanks!

How long is the video on the DVD ? Personally I'd just do a direct copy with Toast for Mac. If it's a normal video DVD then you can just use any DVDR disc to copy it to !

I'm sure there are free apps for the Mac to copy it though. Perhaps you could start with Handbrake for Mac or MacTheRipper to get the video off the original.

Once you have that then the rest is easy. In fact you could even give out DIVX files or make it suitable for an iPod !

    MacTheRipper

    Handbrake

It's divided into a few parts but in total its around 1hr 40.

I've used handbrake for mac to back it up into MP4s already so that's sorted.

    Is toast for mac free?

    Burn is free.

    Might be worth considering.

Put DVD into the Mac, open Disk Utility, highlight your DVD, click on the +New Image button, it will give you 2 drop down option menus, select the CD/DVD master. This will give you an image file. Copy this over to a blank DVD and burn.......

Will that just burn the actual image file itself to a DVD though or will it burn it in a way that makes it watchable on the tv with my DVD player?

That gives you an exact copy of the DVD/CD. You can even do this to copy a Windows only application installer disk. There is a Burn option option in Disk Utility when you select an image file in left hand column (drag your image there when created). Believe Disk Utility will only burn .dmgs ( Burn will burn others ).
