This cant be right, i havent been online lately so dont know if there is a thread.

    http://uk.eurosport.yahoo.com/21042011/63/meireles-handed-fans-award.html
Liverpool midfielder Raul Meireles has capped an increasingly impressive debut season in England by being named the PFA Fans' player of the year.
The 28-year-old arrived in late August from Porto in an £11.5million deal and took a while to settle after being played in a number of positions by then manager Roy Hodgson.
It was not until Kenny Dalglish replaced Hodgson in early January that the Portugal international started to find his best form, opening his account in the Merseyside derby which signalled a run of five goals in six matches.
Those performances earned him the February ESPN PFA player award and he beat off competition from the likes of Arsenal's Samir Nasri, Manchester United's Dimitar Berbatov, former Reds team-mate Fernando Torres and Chelsea's David Luiz to claim the season award.
"Raul has always had the ability he has shown recently," said Dalglish. "Maybe he's settled down a little bit and is more comfortable and confident because he is playing well but there's been nothing drastic [tactically] for any of the players really.
"It is fantastic to see Raul doing so well. He has always been a talented footballer, he's always had what we are seeing now but it's been trying to get it out and it is coming out now and he's scoring goals."

Sky link aswell. Shocking, he hasnt even been our best midfielder this season.

Nice for him but a pretty meaningless award, in fact its pretty much the definition of a pointless award.

    Also the season isn't over.

I thought Meireles and Danny Guthrie shared the award?..

Not as shocking as Bale getting the PFA player of the year IMO.

What midfielders would you rate higher than him this season?

They're two liverpool players, how can the fact I think one is better than the other, be a dig?

Meireles is a much better player than Lucas, and while lucas has had some great games, Chelsea earlier in the season was fantastic, he is not as good as Meireles, imo.

Certainly not a lol-worthy opinion. Theres been a fair bit of debate on the Liverpool thread recently about who should be our POTY. Seems like Lucas and Meireles are the two front runners, and while I'd vote for Meireles, theres a lot of people who think Lucas has been our standout performer.

But Gerrard would be a better player than both of them, should he have got the award?

Lucas has been better than Meireles this season who IMO looked like another poor signing until Kenny Dalglish took over.

Think Meirles and Lucas both have had decent seasons to be fair.

Lucas is underrated for Pool imo

Gerrard has been muck, where as Meireles has been fantastic under dalglish, lucas has been consistently average, whereas meireles is a game winner who can produce moments of pure quality.

A dig in at a LFC fan......that is your opinion, you came across quite condescending with the LOL remark....if i took you up wrong i apologise. Lucas is under rated and has a far better season IMO, he does all the donkey work so Meireles can get forward.

I'm sure a few of the regulars on the lfc superthread could tell you I was fairly active on there match threads and in the superthreads after tbh, I don't really care if you agree with me, i'm just giving my .02c

That Lucas has been consistently average this season is a ridiculous thing to say.

Lucas by a long way tbh.

Meireles got the headlines as he went on a run of scoring some important goals but Lucas has been our most consistant player this season.

Maybe he's been consistently good, but to say he's been consistently excellent is really overrating a lot of his performances imo.

    He's underrated by non-pool fans.

Liverpool fans recognise how important he is for us.

In the same way non-united fans may have not rated Darren Fletcher a few years back.

It's hard to notice how another teams players are playing week in week out if you don't watch their matches :o

Every "big game" this season, he has stood up and been excellent. Everyone of them! I think i could count on 1 hand the amount of poor/average games he has had this season.

As someone already said, you would have to watch him every week to see what he does for that team.

    Chelsea away

    Arsenal away
    City home

There's 4 against the current top 4 clubs

He was outstanding in all these matches.

I would agree, but 4 games isn't consistently "outstanding"

i'm not saying he hasn't been good, in fact I got laughed at in the super thread a while back for suggesting he was better this season than Gerrard, I just don't agree with people saying he has had an outstanding season, a very good season with some outstanding games I would agree with though!

Lucas is easily Liverpool's POTY IMo. Sure Meireles only showed his best form when Kemnny took over and he was played more foten in the position that suits him. Not his fault of course, but it still means Lucas has been better over a longer period.

You wouldn't know it from this thread, but there are in fact other players other than Lucas and Meireles who have played well this season!

I assume the voters were of a red-tinted perspective. Good player who had a decent spell from December onwards, but far, far from player of the year.

Yeah lets get back to the part that the award was given to a ludicrous choice. Its a sad day when footballers get ranked on their personality instead of their merit. Admittedly Nani is an arse and may 'bend the rules' from time to time, but he has been absolutely outstanding this season and won't receive the credit he is somewhat due.

Meireles was voted player of the season so far in december on lfc.tv by a distance. After that, he went on a run of scoring goals for 5 or 6 games, i dont know how lucas even comes into this to be honest (and i know many fellow reds who disagree and think lucas is poty).

Not even close for me. Lucas was rank rotten for 3 months at the start of the season, id say meireles has had 2 or 3 bad games all season, and i have watched 90 mins of every one of them. Fans of other teams clearly agree meireles has been great, if we had better players to pick out his runs he would have 5 or 6 more goals at least, thats all i have to say on it.

I don't think he deserves it, no doubt hes been sensational since Kenny arrived, at the same time, I'm not sure who deserves it. Maybe Wilshire? I'd like to say Hernandez but no.

    Probably go with Barton myself.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 341 ✭✭superfrank

Lucas is a player you won't find many opposing fans praising imo. Because he does alot of the dirty work & isn't a glamorous player!.

Imo Its the same case for John Obi Mikel, who want playing fantastic for the first half of the season & was Chelsea most consistent player! Yet if you asked many fans other than Chelsea they will dismiss him as being a poor player. Take last sat for example, he made something like 95 passes and misplaced 3.

lucas has been good, not excellent.

meireles has been great though. him and suarez have been a breath of fresh air, much needed after the whole rafa/hodgsen/G&H crap

he beat off competition from the likes of Arsenal's Samir Nasri, Manchester United's Dimitar Berbatov, former Reds team-mate Fernando Torres and Chelsea's David Luiz to claim the season award.
    Torres? seriously?

How could Torres be considered competition for any awards this season?

Did you not watch the liverpool owners do the show the very same night?, they took questions from anyone who wanted to call in. They also ran a poll that night and meireles was on around 40% of the vote, Gerrard was on about 30% and others made up the rest, nobody else had more than 10%. I dont have a link but i saw it with my own eyes if thats any good for you.

They vote all year, possibly monthly, im not sure and then at the end the man with the most votes over the season takes it. Thats why luiz is in there, he had 2 or 3 very good games in one of the months.

Meireles has been a breath of fresh air in the league not just at Liverpool. He never stands still in a game he is constantly on the move getting himself open and always look for the quick pass when he gets the ball and not afraid to have a pop at goal either. I have been really impressed by him.

Lucas has been pretty average in a lot of games. There is a lot of love from a section of Liverpool fans for him, I think he got very harsh treatment a couple of years ago and for that reason he gets more credit than he deserves from some people.

He is not underrated by the majority but he is overrated by a section of Liverpool fans. He is underrated by a section of them too. There has always been a love/hate thing going on between Liverpool fans over him.

Lucas does a lot of little bits and pieces throughout a game. He's constantly involved. He gives the midfield shape and reads the game better and better.

He just keeps everything ticking over in possession and wins the ball back when we don't have it.

He's not Xavi or Alonso, but this season he's been excellent, particularly since Dalglish arrived.

I'm a United fan and even I have to admit Lucas has been your best midfielder this season, Meireles is good, good movement, seems to have an eye for a goal, but he only began performing this well since Kenny came in, as far as input for Liverpool over the duration of the season, Lucas pips him
