Ray Wilkins commentary style

I find he speaks in a condescending sort of way, but at the same time comes across very obvious and some comments are just stupid!

Last night he critisied Sagna for going off the pitch with a blood lip.

He then said something along the lines of "thats why I like watching games in twickenham, blood everywhere and those rugby boys don't come off the pitch"

Hes clearly never watched a rugby game or he would see blood substitutes...

Yeah but if he got sacked from his commentary job, the station would go into a downward spiral, leaving their chances of competing with the big boys in tatters for the rest of the season!

Well done young MrStuffins, that's a very good reply. Very well done.

I was very sceptical at first but (and I feel dirty about this) I have to admit he’s growing on me...

If he was a super hero, he would be called Captain Cliche.

I don't even have Sky and I'm looking forward to when the Neviller has to comment on a Liverpool vs Utd. game.

Will his head explode during a Liverpool Man City game? Please say it will.

Wilkins is simply appalling as a commentator.
He says the most obvious things over and over again, has a monotone voice,is very jingoistic and imparts almost zero knowledge to the viewer.
For someone who has played and coached at alot of top clubs his lack of knowledge of the game is alarming.

    Says random things
    Says a lot of clichés
Says really long sentences which amount to very little, if any, insight....

.... sorry is this Andy Gray we're talking about???!!!

Wilkins is ticking nearly all the same boxes, all he needs is a catchphrase ala 'Take a Boo Son' and he's here to stay

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 13,224 ✭✭✭✭SantryRed

Wilkins has a hell of a lot more to say tactics wise than Gray said in his 20 years with Sky.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 28,710 ✭✭✭✭Paully D

All I know is I wouldn't like to be cleaning his jocks after a game.

Give me Wilkins over Gray any day of the week though.

Does he keep in touch with The Adams Family?

Sky have a hard on for him, I find him annoying.

I think he's great. He knows a fcuk load more than Andy Gray does and thats a fact son. Love it when he spots the tactical weakness of the teams and explains it and calls them out on it. Not just mouthing of during a replay say "och you've got to doooo better than that"

Up your hole andy gray :pac:

little things that he says annoy me but he's ok most of the time

I like him. His relentless positivity is quite endearing. Makes a nice change to Ray 'Moan' Houghton.

I am being swayed toward liking him after I really didnt enjoy him when he started

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 31,974 ✭✭✭✭Mars Bar

At first, I felt like I was getting a tactical lesson from listening to him but that Spurs v Madrid game was just painful.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 1,001 ✭✭✭ColmDawson

He was bizarrely over-enthusiastic in the Spurs - Real game, but otherwise I've found his comments quite informative. He has an amusingly old-fashioned politeness to him.

Absolutely. I don't think Wilkins is amazing or anything like that but his positivity is a welcome change to the likes of Houghton.

I think he's ok but he says a lot of stupid things like during the Liverpool vs Arsenal game, Martin Tyler said Arsenal had drawn their last 3 home games or something similar and then Ray said "if you said that would happen at the start of the season, you'd be very very wrong"

That title has already been awarded to Ray Houghton.

That was hilarious, I knew what he was trying to say, but his delivery was Keegan-esque

Kevin Keegan commentating during a European Cup final:

"There's 22 good players out there on the pitch".

Hes much better as a pundit than co-commentator but still seems to know far more about football than Andy Gray

Either way the words 'massive' and 'cog' should never be put together like that ! :pac:

Have always been a big fan of Ray Wilkins, extremely well spoken chap and I think he is a big improvement on Andy Gray.

And of course he refers to us as "The Arsenal" :)

I was going nuts listening to him talking about Michael, Gareth and worst of all Ricky (Carvalho).

That Jay Spearing video had me in stitches!

Absolute batcase of a commentator, which is strange cause he's a fairly good pundit. He talks too much when commentating.

Favourite line from last night: "I'm a great lover of Jack Wilshire Martin".

Oh Ray he's less than half your age you durt bag!!

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 12,399 ✭✭✭✭ben.schlomo

wasnt cracked on him at the start bu hes definitely grown on me quickly. Has a great knowledge of the game, imparts lovely little tidbits throughout and is very positive. Big improvement on tick-e-boo gray and theres no way Neville will be any good, he has no opinions anytime ive seen him in punditry and just says generic opinions.
