Cautionary Tales from the 'Front Line'

I came across a real brainteaser today......
I was called out to a 'no signal situation' today.

Firstly: the client had tried to use a splitter to produce 2 feeds to his newly acquired Sky HD+ Receiver.....the result a 'Fried LNB'.

Secondly: he had decided to replace the Coax Cable, so he went to a well known (French) DIY Store and bought a 10 meter ready made up with the F-connectors cable......
So, after i had fitted the new LNB, the System was still showing 'No Satellite Signal'....
My conclusion...it HAD to be the 'Brand NEW, expensive ready fitted all singing and dancing Cable'...!!!!!!!!!!
On close examination i found that at one end both the inner core was too short to make a connection AND that the Braiding was actually 'wound around' the inner core so shorting it out. I am not sure if the other end was faulty, but i cut off and replaced the F-connector anyway.....

there are two thoughts we should take from this event.....
    1. It is probably not a good idea to mess about with things that you dont understand......
    2. Dont assume that just because something is Brand New and From a (so called) Reputable source that the item will actually have been made correctly and therefore be 'Fit for Purpose'!!!!

Ah well, its all in a days work....

I understand about the "ready made" co-ax, if not the plugs not connected correctly, thay are also made of cheap co=ax, invariably always meaning a big loss of signal, even the short ready made co-ax, I always advise people to make their own, i have even explained to them step by step on how to make their own, people NEVER buy "ready made" cable, it's not easier in the long run!! .
