No your not mad and whats good about it is you've plenty of time to get the training in.
You could check here http://www.jeffgalloway.com/ for advice on a run/walk strategy and yes plenty of people will be doing the same. Best of luck with it.

Last year (2010) 16 people took over 8 hours. Beat that and you wont be last.

Go for it. You have 6 months and will have improved lots anyway if you train with a good plan. You wont be last. Not even close. :)

If you can run/jog any of it you certainly won't be last and if you follow the 10k, 10 mile, half marathon route that you're planning then you'll begin to get an idea of whether you love or hate the bigger distances. So you're on the right track but if it's not for you then just stick to the 10k's or whatever you like and aim for running better times rather than running further. The marathon isn't the 'be all and end all' for everyone, I've run a few half-marathons and finished a marathon (i won't say ran it) but can't say I've enjoyed them. I've very much enjoyed 5k, 10ks or running a 10 mile when I'm fit enough to do it justice.

Not mad at all; you've a much better running base than I did when I started training for my first marathon, and nope -- you wont be last. Dont even worry about it.

Get yourself a training plan that you can realistically follow (Lots of folk use the hal higdon ones, I used this one which seemed lighter on mileage--http://www.nyceats.net/running/2004/06/_nonrunners_mar.html) and get yourself to the point you can comforatbly do the first weeks worth of running. Build up slow and have fun!

I'm thinking of training for the marathon this year. I can run 5k's at the moment in about 30 mins. I'm pretty sure I don't have enough mileage built up, but should be able to build up over the summer. I'm planning on doing the race series over the year and am working on a training plan. A mentored thread would be great and can't wait for it to start up.

The 18 week training plan for the marathon doesn't start until the end of June, so it still seems a bit early :) Maybe I'll start after the Sportsworld 5 mile in the middle of May?
In the meantime, you could look at the Hal Higdon Spring Training plan. That builds up nicely to the Higdon Novice training plan we'll be using. (You'd want to jump in at week 3 or 4 to have it finished in time)

Ray it might not be a bad idea to have a thread up in the next little while as a lead in to the mentored thread. What d'ya think?

Sure I suppose there's no real harm putting up the mentored thread early...

    well done!!
signing up and commiting to doing it is the hardest thing. there will be difficult days between here and there but store up the experiences and use them as fuel on the day of the race. you couldnt pick a better first marathon, flat, fast and a fantastic atmosphere. best thing about it being your first marathon is that you get to break your personal best! there are some of us around here that have been trying to do that for years!!
enjoy every second, you are about to join a very elite group of people, people who can push themselves to run a distance many fear to drive.
    its gonna be awesome!

I had the same debate with myself last year. Each year for the past 3-4 years I set my target of running the marathon - but of course gave up after a few weeks training !. But last year I signed up for the race series which was a great way to build up the miles. I did follow the Hal Higdon novice (get you around) programme and it worked a treat. I hadn't done really any running / training in years and survived just under 4 hours. I did follow the training religiously and I couldn't emphasise enough how important that was - especially after the 16/17 mile mark. Best of luck

    The Race Series

Edit: Just so that you can't say you weren't warned - Don't run the marathon this year, build up a decent endurance base and go for it next year.

If ever there was a case for merging threads, this is it! RayCun is mentoring a Dublin City Marathon 2011 Novices Mentored Thread, so any questions people want to ask about anything related to preparing for your first Dublin marathon, would be best answered there.:)
