Did you end up in the job you always wanted or studied for? Or did you just fall into it and now it pays the bills and you get so satisfaction out of it?

I’m coming to the end of my education and I can go one of two ways. I can sell out and work for industry, make loads of money but have no job satisfaction. Or I can work on mediocre/reasonable money, work 24/7, but have job satisfaction.

Dont get me wrong Im happy and grateful that I will be able to get a job (probably not in this county), Im just curious how it worked out for others in a similar situation?

Yep. Took years and lots of disappointments to get it though - and it finally happened for me during this crash, which is obviously something I never expected.

Got a decent job, pays well, very little job satisfaction. 9-5, Mon-Fri so can't complain. I'm happy enough with my lot tbh!

I think you're asking the wrong questions OP. I think it should be are you happy with your life. Because there's more to it than working!

You work to live, not live to work.

That's true, but considering that work takes up 1/3 of our day for 5 days a week (for a lot of people, not all), it's a significant factor.

OP whatever you decide to do make sure there is a balance, seen far too many people 'marry' their jobs to the detriment of their social lives. End up sitting in work til 8 or 9 at night, home, eat. bed, work and the cycle continues.

I work to earn money which enables me to do stuff I enjoy in my free time.

Plus if you work 24/7 how the hell you gonna play Roller Derby :P.......unless you are going 'pro' at it, are you? :pac:

Aye, it's a necessary evil to enjoy the bigger and better things. Be them holidays\hobbies\sports\pub outings with a few mates\etc.

I'd be happier with my career if I was getting paid for it :(

Ever since I was young I dreamt of being an accountant stuck in a stuffy office with people I'd never talk to outside work. I'm delighted with the choices I've made!

Not really, I took the easy path: good at business studies so did Bus Org, Economics and Accounting for LC. Got A's in all 3 so did a B.Comm, like computers so majored in MIS. Followed it with a H.Dip. in Systems Analysis and have basically worked at whatever people will pay me to do with my skill-sets since.

I've a decent job, an okay salary but struggle to support a family on it and it's less than I feel I'm worth to the company, it's not quite 9 - 5, more like a 9 to 6 with regular travel which can stretch days to 14 - 18 hours quite easily. It's a job, not one I'm particularly in love with or would like to see my children go into tbh.

I think I'd have enjoyed auto mechanics or engineering of some kind more but I was a lazy teenager and engineering is a pretty tough college course, given the financial freedom to do so with my current education and experience I think I'd enjoy something like running my own café or something along those lines.

Used to be worried over promotions, applying for things, worried who is moving on and who isn't

    Couldn't give a damn anymore.
Show up, work to a decent standard, leave on time and collect my salary.
On auto pilot realy, got no thanks in the past for working late and working for free and I learned my lesson

My job is somewhat related to what I would like my 'career' to be, but seriously low on job satisfaction and it only just pays the bills.

I would totally go for job satisfaction though, 100%!

nope... fell into it, leaving in August and going to College.

I'll miss the paycheck and it's not the worst job in the world, but I've little to no enthusiasm for it and I've few commitments.

Being married to the job is what worries me. After college and before my post grad I worked in industry, I was paid well, left at 5 and didn’t think about it again till the following morning. But the job itself was soul destroying..... To have job satisfaction in my industry means being married to the job, to live eat and sleep it.

Sure I still have some time... and yes if I wanna go pro I have to take that into account too  :pac:

I'm in between about it OP but I am happy with my career path. I happened to have a job I never thought I would get into but I did but having difficulty trying to get back into it again due to employment market. Ya I am two minds about either continuing trying to get into a job I want or get any job...

To be honest I'd rather have a soul destroying 9-5, Mon-Fri job than be married to a job you get decent satisfaction in. I would rate social satisfaction over job satisfaction any day. I don't care what they throw at me in here once I am leaving at 5pm and I don't have to worry about this place again until 9am the next morn (or Monday morn). In this job I can plan whatever I like in the evening knowing that the job won't get in the way, perfect!

    Meh!
I'm stuck in a rut to be honest. Job pays the bills and whereas there can be extended very busy periods, generally speaking it's quite handy. It'll never make me rich, but then i'm not very materialistic, so it's kinda swings and roundabouts. I'm sure i could get a better paid job, but i have a lot of freedom in the job i'm in now that i'd have to sacrifice for the extra money.
I never really wanted a "career" as such, i like to just forget my job when i go home!
I'd be much happier just winning the lottery!:D

Delighted with my career as I never thought I would get into the industry I'm in, primarily because it's ridiculously competitive. As such, money isn't great at all and there isn't much opportunities for alternative employment but aside from that, I really enjoy going to work every day. Had worked a few sales jobs etc beforehand, which paid a lot better but weren't in any way fulfilling.

Jaysus will people please at least tell us what you actually do in your job in your reply!

I work in the airport, passenger services and although it's not a career, I enjoy it for what it is - close to home, great people, have a laugh every day and it's a stepping stone on to something else.

I've always seen myself working in a stuffy call centre with the constraint of a headset....

But I can access boards from my work pc so not all bad :o

But come 5pm when I'm out of this kip things start to brighten up:D

My girlfriend and I found out she was pregnant quite early on I went out and found a job about a year and five months ago since then I've worked my ass off gotten two internal promotions and now and external one to the main company.

I have enjoyed every day of my job, some days have been incredibly stressful and tough, others have been challenging and educational. I've never had a day were I ever said "I really wish I didn't have this job". I look forward to moving to an even more difficult position in a weeks time for better rewards and more challenges and I know I'll enjoy every moment of it. Second kid on the way, moving into a new house (renting).

TLDR; Yes I am happy with my career.

Really happy with what I do now. Teaching English in Italy. It is harder slog than I thought it was going to be when I first thought about doing it and I work all day long and most weekends, but I think the measure of a job is if you dread going in the next day and I can honestly say I do not have that feeling anymore.

I have changed careers a few times in my life. Worked in construction for close to 13 years with a brief one year stint in a fabricating plant which was soul destroying. Did a degree course part time and got myself an office job which equally drove me around the bend so after the recession kicked in I did my teacher training and came over here. 2 years later and am happy as a clam. Could do with earning twice as much but I think that would be most folks lament!

I've never "worked" a day in my life and with this, finding my first job gets harder every time I try some where new.
The general response of, "You're 20 and you've never had a job?!" is getting old.

I've worked with family, work experience and nixers for years but I've never been able to land a real job.
I'd really love to be in a stable position but for now I'm not happy with my working life, one bit.
