:o okay, am not too familiar with these things... but was wondering what the best (and cheapest) way to watch my sky+ on another TV. Ideally so my son can watch the channels on one tv and I can watch taped stuff on another. dreading a full summer of cartoons!
and as the title says, an idiots guide please:o

the two rooms are next to each other, approx 20ft away.

You both can't watch different stuff from the same sky+ box on different TV's at the same time.

Multiroom from Sky normally costs an extra €15 per month (12 months minimum). They occasionaly have offers discounting this. They will need to install an extra Sky box in the second room and run cabling.

The Sky web site says "set-up costs may apply". Probably less than €50, but ring them and try to get it for free.

Sky will need to run a cable to connect BOTH the existing and new Sky box to a home phone line. There is NO way around this, although some people here seem to get away with disconnecting them at a later stage.

    Details here:

Don't forget multiroom will need a phoneline connected to box.FTA box for the second room could be an option, there's about 6 or 7 dedicated free kids channels on it.

Just don't forget to lock the many porn channels!

    just doing the maths here.

to get a fta box would cost about 150 euro + cableing + time.
sky are doign multiroom for 10 euro a month. total cost €120 and no hassle.

thanks for working that out:) I'm guessing we will probably go with the multi room - just need to work out logistics for phone line. are they easy to wire yourself or would I need an engineer? I think I have the wires & sockets but don't think they are connected?

You need an existing working landline (e.g. Eircom). Don't worry about the cabling or sockets, the Sky installer will look after that.

Is there any way to avoid connecting all the additional boxes to the phone? I've had sky multiroom since 2008 and have never connected any of the boxes to the phone line. Now Sky are saying they will charge me for 3 independent boxes (ie not the additional €15 per box) unless I connect all the boxes to the phone.
    This cases me 2 issues
    1. Having multi connections has impacted my Broadband (phone) in the past
    2. I don't want to re-wire the cable through out the whole of my house.

    What are my options?

They have to be connected. Simple as. Otherwise, you can cancel the subs and use them as FTA boxes (if you are out if contract).

1,connect the boxes to the phone line. ~(you need a filter for each phone line)

    2,pay 3 full price subs.

3, drop the extra multiroom subs and just watch the free channels. in the other rooms.

you can put in a temp phone line to each box and do a force call back from each box ,

unplug the phone lines again and wait for the next letter from sky..

    .

John, that's what I was thinking of doing. Do you think it would work if I did that once a month?

Tx JD, I think I might do that with one of the TV's. I've been told that if you take out the Sky card it will show you what would be available as my FTA. Does that sound right?

yes just unplug and remove the card, (if its a hd box with hd sub it may not revert to the english epg though)

I am not sure ,but a few people on here are doing it, might be worth a go.
