hi folks, if this is in the wrong forum please move, i recieved a watch from the us, delivered by fed ex, the watch was valued at $80, today i recieved a demand from fed ex for 31.67, the breakdown is as follows
    economy service 0.80
    duty 18.77
    administration fee 10
    vat 2.10

luckily it was not a middle of the road watch, is this the norm, fed ex seem to be the only people to be billing people, i also reciev ed one from singapore the same day by reg post no bill, (thankfully).

one pays the vat on everything including shipping, it is all totaled up, it looks like i should have stuck to my guns and demanded it be sent by us mail.

I always stipulate that anything shipped from the US come by USPS. FedEx will absolutely screw you on the charges. With USPS, I've only ever been charged for one item, and had several slip through unnoticed. Was considering buying a watch from eBay yesterday, but the seller would only ship FedEx, which could have added €500 to the price

Sorry that this doesn't help you, but a few months ago I had a watch delivered by fedex, I cant remember the exact figures, but say I think I paid about €125 in tax etc including the fedex charge. All was fine, then a couple of weeks later I got a letter from fedex saying I owed them €131 in charges, I rang up to tell them that I paid on delivery and what I paid. The girl on the phone said that I shouldn't have been made to pay on delivery and asked me to send proof. I emailed a screenshot of an online credit card bill with a reference number to the case. I got an email back a few weeks later saying everything was ok. I'd love to know why I was being charged more the second time.

All detail is in the sticky. Duty should not be charged if the value was under €150. VAT applies to anything valued over €22.
