Hi. I was thinking of getting an impact bag. Are they a good training aid?

I'm sure you could make your own one if you tried! An old tyre, a canvar bag stuffed with old clothes, an old couch cushion or something like that.

OR, even better, just get someone to break your wrists and save yourself the money.
    Impact bags! Jeesh.

There's a fair bit on the web about them causing injuries.

I do. Maybe in baseball they might make sense but with the grip of the club needed to be so light I can only see you training yourself to grip the club harder and tightening the arms etc so I can't see them being of any use.

    What a load of guff!

An impact bag, when used correctly, is possibly the best training aid for ensuring early hip release thus getting weight onto the left hand side.

You are not supposed to swing hard at an impact bag - half speed at the very most. I'd definitely advise using one if you have problems with an over the top or hands/arms domninated swing.

Look up impact bag drills on utube and you'll see how to get the best out of it :)

People use them for a variety of different reasons.
Strengthen the wrist, see the end position at the end of a swing, repeating the same swing where they won't slow down the swing, position of the hands at impact etc etc.

The problem is that it's an impact. If you're doing a correct swing then you're body has coiled and a correct swing needs to finish, not at the impact. If you're swining like you swing on the course then you'll damage your wrist, you'll hurt your back and right elbow and you'll end up learning nothing that you can't learn by putting a smartphone down and recording your swing. A camcorder and play back is just as good. Swing with all the club and watch it in slow motion.

If used wrong, an impact back will cause shock to wrists and hands and you'll end up with a tight grip.

Bring out a bean bag and belt it a dozen times and see what you've "learned" from it. The answer will be nothing.
Impact bags are not necessary and causing more damage than aid to your game.

Sorry but I don't think you understand the basis of using the impact bag - it is not about strengthening anything and as I said in my earlier post you do not swing at it like you would on the course(ie full speed) and so you will not damage anything. Have a look at this link and you'll see what I mean:

It's about getting the feeling of having your hands ahead of the ball at impact - which you should have if you have released your left hip and generated lag - a lot of club golfers have a problem of leaning back at impact - what this drill does is help get the feeling of getting onto your left side at impact which will in turn help your ball striking and reduce fat and thin shots.

Ah, I see what you mean. you could use a cushion or a beanbag there for that. No need to even use a golf club.

The basis of using an impact bag is different for different people. People do use it for strengthening. People do use it for repitition drills.

I would also add that golfers then tend to sway the hips in an effort to get the hands forward and that brings a push/slice so sticking an umbrella along the left side of the body is also a good tip. No point in having the hands forward if everything else is moving too.

Henry Cotton was a big fan of the exercise and used to use a tyre.

'Impact' generally is good for the human body though.
